    silentnviolent accumulator--selling--make an offer I can't refuse

Hi all. While pawing through 10 lbs of non-us coins I got recently I came across this little guy. At just about half the diameter of a US dime (shown on top of one for size comparison) it is the smallest coin I own :D What the heck is it?o_O 022.JPG 023.JPG

[quote="Ardatirion, post: 1751710, member: 9204" I can't see a thing in their scan. There is no way this coin is worth more than $10.[/quote] .....................................................I just have to ask, if you can't see it, how do you know what it is and what it's worth? Curious.

I can't see it either. The scan is far too fussy.

BTW, what is the size of your coin in mm?

Ummm, I've got a coin that's a mere 7.9 mm in diameter (weighing-in at 0.52 grams of silver)

    Samos, Ionia, AR Obol

It SAYS that they are 10.8mm... however I haven't measured it myself.

ok putting it against a ruler with mm it's just under 11mm, so 10.8 is probably right. It is also a very thin planchet; just over a half a mm.

So, then the coins presented by stevex6 and I are even smaller. And consider there was no automation. All hand cut dies and hand struck. Pretty impressive don't you think? All that detail on such small flans. Magnificent artwork.

That is not Samos. It's from Mylassa in Caria. I believe theres a brief discussion of these coins in SNG Kayhan.

The half obol on the upper left is the smallest (9mm) coin I own It dates from 550 BC from Ionia (Miletus, Lydia). [IMG][IMG]
