interesting Yahoo article on treasure hunters gold coins trove found off Florida. link: http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/treasure-hunters-gold-coin-trove-off-florida-185527099.html
I always get so excited to hear someones found more treasure (coins). and these have not been seen for 300 years. amaZZZZZZZZZZing.
Yep, neat finds. I enjoy reading about these successful recoveries too. However, when and who actually found them is anyone's guess. The guy behind the company, 1715 Treasure Fleet is a property developer who likes to advertise that he bought out some partial stretch of land with hunting rights tied to Mel Fisher's property battle in Florida. Dropping a name like that is just part of drawing attention to yourself, which is something you don't do if you're in the process of recovery of artifacts. The last line of the article is the giveaway about why this story is all over the "news" right now, "He also told ABC News his company is filming a reality show about treasure hunting." The whole story is a set up as advertising for a forthcoming TV program. The pitch: Everybody loves a treasure story in hard economic times! That's the real treasure they are after, milking the dreamers, mass market entertainment for a consumer about to be marketed to when the show is broadcast. Just remember that sometimes the real treasure isn't the actual "find". More often than not, it lies in the opportunity of selling denim trousers, picks and pans to the hopeful prospectors where the fortunes are made.
Sure, because it's a heck of a lot easier to go that route than to stand waist deep in salt water sifting sand day in and day out with a dream in mind of turning one find into a bigger enterprise. Why do anything when you can blame it on something thought to be beyond your control.
Loot has that effect on people and large entities... One of the latest, Odyssey Marine Explorations Inc. based out of Tampa lost it's appeal for the Black Swan trove that was brought back to FLA until being flown over to Spain. The saga continues...
