Did I strike it rich?

Just went to the bank and I asked for any old bills or coins. He had 7 Eisenhower dollars which I took, but what the big surprise was was the the thousand of dollars he had in old bills, see he said that someone dug up a box in their backyard and it was full of old 20,50 and 100s. No silver certificates or gold certificate though just those old bills around 1980 and stuff. What should I look for?

Post a list including denomination, series date, block letters and condition. Without this information no one can answer your question.

they must have been in an air and water proof container or they would more likely look like they were compost.

 

I didn ask about the details, all he told me was that it was dug up. However SOME are turning yellow....

unfortunately notes from the '80s aren't really considered old. most have really high print runs. there are some exceptions of course

 

I didn't exactly 'see' the dates. So I'm not sure they were from the 1980's. I just guessed so because I have a 1981 note and it has the same desgin

 

The design goes back as far as 1928, with some minor changes along the way. Some high-resolution scans or pictures of the front and back are always best. There are valuable varieties including rare blocks, star notes, and mules that can bring a significant premium.

If all of the notes are 1980 and newer, there might be few valuable finds in there. The majority of valuable Federal Reserve Notes come from the 1928 - 1934 series.

No star notes or fancy serial numbers
Only 1 is UNC with no obvious creases. The others are pretty much UNC except for a few creases.

Most are in pretty tough shape but nothing TOO severe, some have alot of creases and some have rips. No star notes or fancy serial numbers except for a serial number of -B02877777A.The uncirculated dates are:1990

No special serial numbers or star notes , BUT I did find this serial number that ended with an S. this was the only one. Is this rare? Also UNC notes were :1985

Thanks guys, I know this wasn't the best of finds but it was exciting for me are there any errors for these dates that I should recheck to see if they have it?

There are quite a lot of errors from the 70s and 80s. Look for board breaks, turned digits, obstructions, mismatched serial numbers, offset errors, misaligned overprints, miscuts, and more.

Assuming you don't have rare blocks or errors, the only valuable notes will be the uncirculated ones. You might be able to squeeze a few bucks out of the 02877777 note on eBay. The rest would be spenders.

Keep in mind that in order for a note to be uncirculated, it must not have any significant handling. A single fold will usually knock the note down to almost uncirculated (AU). Unfortunately AU notes from these series carry very little, if any, premium over face value.
