just wondering what apps folks may be using to keep track of coin collections these days. There was a really nice one for android that a simple interface, easy to add or subtract coins as well as grade, comments etc. As of yet I can not find a user friendly one for the iphone/ipad. may just try and find a spreadsheet or something.

Which android app were you using?

  4. I actually have made myself an Excel spreadsheet that works pretty well. I've put a lot of effort into designing it, and I'm quite satisfied with how it works.

I use one row per decade, and then a column for each year in that decade. The blue and orange represent Philadelphia and Denver, respectively. I don't need to explain the S and the O. A red X indicates that no coins were minted in that year or at that mint. This might not be ideal for some of the older series (large cents, for example) with lots of variations within a year, but for my purposes it's excellent.

I have a spreadsheet for everything I own, which is arranged by purchase date (not the best, unfortunately). As I photograph my coins and put them in containers, I plan to use the photos as a kind of digital album.

I use Bento on my iMac. It's basically a database program for people who don't normally set up databases. Pretty much drag & drop the fields you need and name them whatever you want. You can include media files as well and I also use the corresponding apps for my iPhone & iPad.

I would like to make a few suggestions if you dont mind, that is if you are the developer and can edit the program.

Would love to see an integration of NGCs certification look-up, that was one of the first things i noticed. This may not be possible since you are already using PCGS' platform, but i dont know if its not something that can be added.

I also wonder if you can implement some sort of option screen to let you choose a particular collection that you are working on. What I mean by that is there are folks who are looking for a program to catalog and database everything they have purchased (much like what youve created), whereas people like myself are looking for a program that will do the same thing, but with the additional option of cataloging various sub collections and seeing the progress on those as well. Like Franklin Half Dollars. I would like to see a program that lets me enter into the Franklin Subset, or choose the Franklin subset and let me know the progress as I go along and sort of keep track of which coins i need and which ones i already have, calculate percentage completed, and give the over all number of coins in the set itself.

Sort of how I envision it is something like this:

When you touch the icon in the upper left hand corner it slides to the page 'Home' which brings up your collection listing all the denominations under that. So like under 'Commemorative' you could add something like 'Sets' and when that opens you have the various sets you are working on, like: US Type Set, Washington Quarters, Mercury Dimes, Franklin Halves, Jeffersons, Etc.

I contacted NGC's service department and they shook their head when I asked if I could use their data in the app. Odd, because it's public data that anyone in the world can access and only helps collectors. Que sera, sera.

Sub-sets are a clever idea. I will have to make some notes and see what i can come up with. Also, I typo'd a single character in my code, so you won't be able to store seated dimes until Apple approves my fix. Sorry!

That's weird they wouldn't let you use it. Crazy.

I guess it's also a good thing I don't have any seated dimes in my collection. Phew. Lol

Anyway that would be great if you could develop something for the different sets. I realize its quite a bit of work, but I think it would give your program an edge over any competitors at the moment.

Honestly I'm just glad someone FINALLY developed a decent iPhone app for this. You have my sincerest thanks and gratitude. Keep up the good work!

I'm using the free app called Coin Collection. The thumbnail is a Lincoln cent. I like it but I wish I could add a grade to each coin, so I know when I'm out if I find something, ill know if it would be an upgrade or not.

    Here's a couple more suggestions

We need the choice for a twenty cent piece. Just tried adding mine and realized it wasn't there.

Also something is amiss with the value total. I have 3 coins uploaded and it says they are worth $1078.00

    The values I entered were:

    $150
    $420
    $254

So there's an issue there somewhere. I thought it was adding what I paid plus the assigned value but that can't be it either

Last suggestion and I hope you don't think I'm being hard on this app or anything but I've been yearning for something like this for my phone. But again where I previously suggested a 'Set' feature go under the commems section, maybe add an 'over view' button to allow users to see a straight list of all their coins in order starting with earliest coins and smallest denominations first and going from there. Again these are just suggestions I am seeing as I play with it. I truly want to see it succeed so I'm trying to offer legitimate issues to help improve it.

Thanks for listening and considering the things I've mentioned.

Carboni7e - Can you clarify the costs of Coin Vault. I am looking at a review which states it is a waste of money. Besides the download fee you have to constantly pay to use the app. - $.99 for 2 coins, $1.99 for 5 coins, $2.99 for 10 coins, $4.99 for 25 coins and $9.99 for 100 coins. Is this reviewer smoking something or is he correct in what he says?

Feel free to PM me about any questions, I don't want to spam the thread.

But 20 cent pieces can be found under Quarters. Iceman - that reviewer is smoking something funny. You can add as many coins as you want for free. The upgrades are for the appraisal service.

The IRS will love this method when you go to sell all profits are going to be based on sale price over face value. As you have no record of original cost of the items.

BTW I use Excel on the computer and my phone is a dummy with no apps.

Exactly. I commented about that in my review of the app. It clearly states in his FAQ that appraisals are what cost money. The app is fantastic
