Hello everyone. I am new to the site although I had signed up a while ago. I have about 15 morgan dollars in good condition and one of them is the very rare 1893s. I have not had them graded and the main reason is I am a little worried on whether I will receive the same coins back. My question(s) to everyone is has anyone sent morgan dollars to have them graded and if so where? Do I need to ? and if I was interested in selling them .. would it be better to do it as a whole or each coin separate? thank you everyone who takes time to assist me me. Looking forward to your insights
Generally it's not worth sending them to be graded unless it's a really rare date. They are worth $20-$25 for an average morgan dollar right now.
Generally speaking, Gubni is right... common circulated specimens are not worth the effort or expense, but if you have an authentic 93-S, submission is worthwhile regardless of any problems the coin may have. With that said, you first need to be sure you have the real deal or this will clearly be a waste of time and money. If you can post clear photos, please do so. Don't think about selling until you are sure what you have, and as for not receiving the same coins back, don't worry about it.
Hi Books B4 coins , I am 100% sure it is authentic because the coins were passed on to me. They were put away for 77 years in a luggage that had not been opened until the day it was passed on to me. I will upload a pic when i get home from work. What are other key dates in the collector world? I know from research that 93 s is the most valuable but are there any other key dates?
I understand your reasoning, but this in no way guarantees a coin to be the genuine article; fakes and alterations have been around for an even longer time. With that said, for your sake I do hope it is genuine and I very much look forward to seeing your images. As for other "better dates", it may be easier for you to list the other 14 coins than it would for me/us to run through the series and separate the better date/mints, especially because condition can, with certain coins, be everything. There is a lot more to it than a certain date being the most valuable.
There are more then a few 1893 S morgans with a modified date or added mintmark. I would take BooksB4coins advice.
I am in a similar situation to you, Invsgrtp, in that I have 12-15? Morgans (some almost unc looking) in really nice shape passed on to me by to 2 relatives that have long passed, and had them since they were young (early/mid 1900s). I know they may not all be special, but I'd bet a few (due to condition) may be worth more than standard circulated coins. I just know nothing on grading, so I'll post some in a new thread as time permits... Good luck on yours.
