    silentnviolent accumulator--selling--make an offer I can't refuse

Hi all. based on a blurry pic not unlike this one, I took a $20 gamble on the group of 10 wheats.

Every angle and in different light in which it is viewed seem to portray a different last digit in the year

    I'm thinking 1918-D.

    Others in the group.

Not a total loss, as these were part of the group of 10:

I don't see how anyone could put the date 1914 on the 2x2 with the coin in that condition. I don't think you're going to get anyone on here tell you it's a '14. The last digit looks rounded to me. If there's no VDB on the bust, the closest you could guess would be a '13 IMO.

I second the 1918-D. You didn't do that bad for $20, but if it was on eBay, I would file an SNAD and get a partial refund.

I am also seeing a well worn '18-D.

I had the same problem with this coin I found in circulation. I ended up throwing it in the "odd-ball" jar:

1918-D, looks have been exposed to acid and retoned.

Thanks! No, it was not on ebay and $20 was a worthwhile gamble for the potential reward. Just too bad I can't do the happy dance for scoring a 14-d for $20. Plus, my daughter helped me open the package and picked one out for herself, so... It was worth every bit. :)

Why, without knowing anything about how the coin/lot was offered, would you say such a thing? Filing a SNAD should be used as a last resort and not the go-to option whenever a gamble does not pay off in a buyer's favor.

To be fair, it WAS listed and described as a 14D, and in a holder labeled 14D. $22 was, like I said, all I would gamble. I even called the auctioneer and asked if he could confirm the cent was as labeled. I was totally honest and upfront with him, explaining its scarcity in the series. I told him that if he could confirm it for me, I may be willing to go higher but without some kind of verification I was at my limit and was the current leading bidder. This is why I love the smaller, local auction scene. Customer service is great at around 90% of them.

He was honest and told me straight that he could not confirm it as the last digit was too worn.

This guy auctions off LOTS of coins and I've gotten some pretty stellar deals in the past from him...

His reputation has risen in my eyes for being straight with me.
