Early Commems with original packaging... Here is some cool stuff. I am working through a large group/hoard of these packages. Some great coins and holders. More will follow later with great color and documents. Enjoy!
Am I the only one that when you see Doug respond first gets very nervous that you did something wrong or broke a rule with your post?
Very cool! Have never seen the original packaging. All you did was post pictures of coins, what is there to get nervous about? :missing-tooth:
Will post Yorks later, there will be 2 of them. One with 3 coins, one with 2. One has the mailing envelope.
And you will see even less of the old holders in the future. Once the coins are pulled out and slabbed the holders have a tendency to get "lost". And if they are sent to an auction house along with the old holders the holders are usually just thrown away and the just the coin/slab gets delivered to the new owner. People may say "buy the coin and not the holder" but those old holders are neat and a historical part of the coin.
Amazing, when I opened this thread I thought it would be about modern commems. In over 40 years of collecting I have only seen the Pan Pac set in original packing – didn’t know the others had packaging. Not real sure from the pics, but would some of those coins benefit from conservation (the Arkansas & Oregons)?
The earliest commemorative I have is the 1935 S San Diego Expo. Definitely a great and difficult series to acquire. The early commemorative series that is.
The only time I have read about original commemorative packaging from the 1892-1954 era was in the large thick book on commemorative coins that Q. David Bowers published about 15 years ago. I would imagine much of this packaging is long gone.
I was just reading about these in the Early Commem book. Very cool indeed. You must show us the rest when they come in!
