I trust you recognized the Marius in that lot. The question is whether the person that wandered into the shop was aware that Marius was a step up from the other LRB's in the group. Certainly any silver of the period is a step up so the Gratian is a special item. The Vahabalathus is a common coin and available nicer when it comes to surfaces. Technically you should display the Aurelian side as the reverse since the Antioch mint was under control of the boy king and, more importantly, the S under Aurelian is the workshop number (6) and mintmarks are on the reverse in this period. The Trier Constantius II is a nice coin but at this period being a leftie and fancier bust is not as premium as in other times.

In the low end group, I think I see two coins of the third century but most are between Constantine and Gratian periods. The Marius does not belong in this group even though it has a rough patch on the reverse. Do such things walk in loose like shown or were they in holders/albums?

I would sincerely enjoy that Marius and the Silver Gratian. Stupid budget! I want to purchase things again.

Also Doug I think you should take Steve's deal ;)

The coins were in holders and the owner has sold me some in the past and she is pretty good at researching... So everything was bought for what it was. She is going to bring in another lot tomorrow. Her father was an advanced ancient collector and has passed.

Yeah, I hear you. We are pretty jaded, looking at ancients all of the time. Sometimes it easy to forget that to 99% of the world, ANY ancient coin is pretty cool. :)

Ancient's are the only numismatic interest I have. Ancients are the only coins I have even looked at for 30 years, and I still find these coins fascinating. Matt's coins are no exception and I would welcome any of them in my collection.

It's been a slow couple of weeks as far as ancients are concerned. That changed this morning when this lot walked in.

    Now the fun begins.

Great lot of AEs, most should be easy to identify.

What is the coin one from the right on the second from the bottom row?

The coin on the bottom row, one from the left looks to be Carthaginian.

Can we see better pictures of those two, as they both look interesting?

Definitely wouldn't mind a couple of those new ones in a flip in my apartment.
