Coins turn many different colors. They tone. Many things cause it. I have a bucket full that came from the ground. Just being on a piece of paper can tone them over time. Folks touch them with all kinds of stuff on their hands. Stuff gets spilled on them. The list could go on.
Both dimes appear fairly normal in terms of the range of appearances that these can obtain. The older coin looks as though it spent some time in a slightly acidic environment such as in the sand at the beach or in a forest so that it has become environmentally damaged (light pitting) whereas the other has attractive (in my opinion) toning likely from being exposed to paper for a long time.
