Without more specifics -- e.g., the area/series of coinage which you're collecting, the quality of the coins that have become available, the completeness you're aiming for when you finish your collection of that series, etc. -- it's hard to give any specific advice on how to approach this upcoming auction/group availability.

That being the case, my personal perspective is that, in general, you should go after every coin that seems appropriate for your collection, within a set budget for that specific coin. This might mean that you'll go over budget for the group of coins in total, and if you end up with all of them, you'll be searching for a way to stretch your budget. But once a specific coin has been purchased by someone else, you're more likely to find yourself regretting that you neglected even to go after the coin. It's better to feel that you lost the coin due to budget constraints for that particular coin, rather than that you didn't even try. Plus, certain coins seem to "speak" to you when you see them, and for those coins, you want to put your best effort into acquiring them.

I'll bet you have some coins acquired before you decided on this specialty. I would decide if they have enough (eBay or wholesale, not retail) value to finance reasonable bids on all the coins soon-to-be-offered. If so, I would decide if I were willing to do that exchange. You make it sound like this would be a great opportunity, not to be duplicated anytime soon. Bid on everything and bid on the ones you can already afford as high as you like. Sell some coins you already have to finance your purchase if you get lucky and win quite a few.

I have friends who talk about building up a "war chest" for just such occasions. They may have to buy fewer common coins every month, but when the occasion arises, they have money to buy something special.

Pick a couple and have someone else bid on the others for you. They would hold the coins and you make payments with interest?

Sorry if i was smart earlier Bill. If you are looking at a specific bidding strategy, i would try laddering. Creating a ladder will enable you to buy more if they go cheaper, or a couple if they go high. I can go into more details if you want. You are young though, ramen noodles and coins aren't so bad. :)

Ramen Noodles are good indeed, Just have to mix 'em with a whole bunch of veggies to compensate the high sodium levels...........

You are a true expert in your area. Trust your instinct if you can gain from a transaction. If you feel you need to borrow money to do it, hit up your friends as I doubt you will regret it. Not many I would say this to as advice , but I believe it for you. Jim

If you're sure on what you are buying, then there is nothing wrong with rice and beans. There will be other years to eat other foods. There will not be as many opportunities to buy rare coins as opportunities to eat different foods in the future.

Thank you all for your wonderful advice. Many of you have confirmed what I was initially considering doing. So it's decided - I've set bids on all of them, modest bids on the least exciting pieces, gigantic bank-breaking bids on the best ones.

The game changed over three pages. As originally described, there is no 'best' but just 'all important' coins. The game plan as described is fine if the 'non-best' are really expendable and only wanted if they can be procured for a low price. As originally described, the answer is to big strongly on all and cut out the rice part of your menu.

Depending on which sale this is, you might check to see if the seller will list an optional bid lot consisting of all the coins as one lot. If the high bid on this lot is higher than the sum of the prices realized of all the separate lots, the sale goes to the way that provides the seller with the higher amount. Your proposal will probably result in your getting the 'best' lots for less than your highest bids but you will lose some or all of the 'lesser' lots.

Try to get all of them. In the meantime take a couple of coins that you don't really care for anymore and try to sell them. Maybe the money you get can cover or cushion the spending.

Doug, you are somewhat correct. There are a few that are comparatively expendable - mostly anepigraphic types with run-of-the-mill deities (Poseidon, Aesculapeus, Fortuna, etc). I focused the brunt of my efforts on the more interesting types (A beautiful head of a dog, an interesting Pan) and pieces with legends (including one that might name the city of Cyzicus!). In any case, I had bids set for all of them, at what I thought they were worth.

    Here's the play by play:
    - A few nights ago, I set my bids using the Gavelsnipe website to snipe them at 10 seconds before closing. The "special" types were set to €125 or €325 for the absolutely indispensable ones. €55 for the middling pieces, €35 for the boring Fortunas and such.
    - I had intended to stay away from my computer, but the pull was too strong. So I sat and watched the first few lots go... to someone else! It wasn't until my first important lot that I won something.
    - Needless to say, it was time to get in the trenches and raise the bids manually. I was able to salvage most of the middling pieces this way.
    - After a few lots, I was able to notice a pattern. There were only three bidders - an opening bidder with a low bid, myself sniping at 10 seconds, and a third bidder sniping at 2 seconds. He was bidding in the mid fifty euro range, so by manually raising everything to 65 or 75, I managed to beat him.
    - I ended up wining thirteen out of twenty-two lots. Overall, it cost me roughly $1200 less than the max bids I had initially set. It is a shame that I didn't get the others, but such is life. I will have to make do with the pictures saved to my photofile.

I'll post pictures after I receive and catalog the coins later this week. It's bad luck to do it sooner.

Thank you again, everyone, for the wonderful advice, even if I ended up not following all of it.
