This is an unattributed S-108 R5. While a low grade specimen, it is priced right for one of an estimated 43-56 known. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1796-Draped...95?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item4ac5a9f32f
Nice find Marshall. If that coin goes for about 5k in VF condition (according to Heritage Auctions), what's a fair asking price on this? In other words... what would you be willing to pay for it? Currently, it's up to about $25.... I'd be willing to take the coin for under $40, however, if it goes $70+, is it over priced at that point? With it being an R5... does the environmental damage even really matter that much?
It's hard to tell. I once thought any identifiable R5 should have a floor at about $100. But that was strictly what I was willing to pay while I was accumulating them. When I went to sell them, I found the market didn't necessarily agree with me. But this is a 1796 which has a little premium due to the date itself. The bottom line. Are you going to be pleased to own it at that price, even if you can't flip it? I was with my R5s.
