Super cool pick-ups => man, I'm lovin' the "Lama" (is it a Lama?)

 

Got this today. This is a chunk of change. 34.11g. .500 Asw in the center, 38.87mm. Guaranteed to wear a hole in your pocket.

 

Today I found a 1988 British penny. It was in a roll of American pennies even though it is quite a bit bigger. I went through 4 rolls and got a 1945 wheat and a 1975 Canadian penny.

 

Llama. Lamas are the guys in Tibet.

Hehe, in German we don't have that problem. There's Lamas with four legs, and Lamas with two legs. Cool coin indeed!

Picked up a nice group of German Federal Republik 5 marks. A few beauties in the bunch.

 

I have always found that Eagle especially attractive...modern and ancient at the same time. Magnificent, each of 'em!

 

Agreed. It's my favorite eagle design of all coinage. Simple yet powerful.

 

1944 Republic of Slovakia Commemorative Silver 50 Korun



34.0mm, 16.6gm; finely reeded edge; AU or so.

I've not had time to research who he was, or what alloy.

Looks like high-nickel CU-NI...could have some silver in it, though. Any idea about mintage?

One of dozens I've recently bought from a new (to me) eBay seller...many of those to follow here as time allows.

 

1796 Portugese Colonial Azores 20 Reis



~34.7mm; 12.1gm; smooth edge.

Copper, or bronze. Somewhat thin, at ~1.65mm. Weakly struck on the denomination side; note the exaggerated lean to the 9 & 6 in the date!

Which brings up a question: on a coin without a 'face', which side is the obverse? Is there a protocol for that differentiation?

 

1877 STtates of Jersey 1/24 Shilling



~25,5mm; 5.5gm; smooth edge; copper, probably.

The color is actually a deep, uniform reddish brown...pretty clean.

 

1816 Portugal silver 400 Reis



~35.8mm; 15.3gm; wreathed or chained edge; somewhat thin, 1.85mm.

Yeah, I wish it weren't holed too.

Since childhood I have resonated with the motto: IN HOC SIGNO VINCES. I think it was on a pack of cigarettes (Pall Mall's?). I asked Dad what the Latin meant; the idea blossomed in my mind, never to depart.

The 'sign' here seems to be a stylized cross; it's probably got a name...Anybody have an inspiration about that?

Another thing that attracted me strongly was the unusual denomination: 400 Reis. Why not 500...or 250? There must have been a good reason, it's just not obvious to me.

As usual my pics show a color, and the coin is silver highlights with dark grey field...no yellow. Blame Tungsten lighting, and poor skills.

 

1937 KINGDOM of EGYPT King Farouk Silver 2 Piastres



~19.02mm; 2.7gm; reeded edge.

Reverse orientation is a question; if 1937 is correct, he is depicted at the tender age of 17 or 18.

I remember Farouk; he was widely photographed after 1952, mostly in trunks, dark glasses and a Fez, around a hotel pool, flocked by women half his age or less, and he was a...LARGE man.

As a boy, I never could reconcile the other prominent Monarchs of the time (Ethiopia's Selassie, England's George VI, etc.) with the image of Farouk, the fat playboy; No gravitas, probably.

Again, poor color; it is white silver.

The 'A' in the title is from my seller, and I see it beneath the Eagle.

I assume (yes, I understand!) that to be a mint indicator...please crush my impertinence with truth, if necessary.

Pretty good shape. As usual, the color is not accurate: it's very dark overall, but not yellow.

Another powerfully evocative Eagle...I wonder what a progression of all the early European Eagles (Russian, Polish, German...there must be others) would look like? Most would appear on coinage, some on National Banners, banknotes, etc...a study in itself.

Do any of you concentrate on Eagles?

~23.1mm; 5gm; reeded edge. No yellow: white silver.

It is a rare thing for me to find a female face on a coin that resonates, even a little. This woman has captured my heart absolutely.

Were I young, I'd call it love at first sight. Something about her image conveys smouldering, earthy, cosmic understanding...and willful desire.

I may be reading a bit too much into her visage...but carnal lust is present in my mind whenever I gaze upon this coin.

I'll spend some time attempting to discover who she (the model) was. I don't know what I'll do with the information...but I can dream.

~25mm; 7.5gm; reeded edge; dirty, but no yellow.

A very busy reverse, made difficult to read by the soiling.

This makes a case for judicious cleansing; It's so dang ugly as it is.
