I should have said "transaction" rather than "charge," although some merchants do attach an actual "fee" or "charge" becuase the bank gets a piece of the pie too. :hail:
I guess people see some kind of upside to that. Paying vampire squids to use my own money isn't an upside for me.
Re: Debit Card Use I thought that debit card use was an alternative to using a check. As far as I know, there is no fee for the user associated with this transaction. The up-side for the vendor is that the transaction goes through only if there is enough money in the account to cover the amount of the transaction. I usually use credit cards cause I get a couple of hundred back a year from the points thingie.
Talk to my daughter......she's always 'itching and moaning about the transaction fees associated with the use of the debit card.
The bank charges a fee to the merchant for debit card use. It's up to the merchant if they are going to extend that fee to you. I find that most merchants just eat this fee and don't extend it to the customers, but some do. I know a guy who owns a produce stand and he is strictly cash or check only... no debit and no credit cards with his business. On one hand, he doesn't want to share his profits with the bank because of these fees. On the other hand he might have more customers if he accepted debit and credit cards and just ate the fees.
One of the many dumb things in life. The bank gives me free checks, and if I use one it costs them money to have to process it. They give me a debit card that will deduct payments straight from my account, saving them money and then want to charge to use it. Whoda thunkit?
Tell a teen that back in the day the credit card was an index card in box at the "deli" and the deli guy used to write out the prices on paper not plastic bag and add it all up with a pencil and they'll probably think you've been nipping at the gin.
