It's a fake tetradrachm of Syracuse produced for jewelry, copying a type struck in the late 6th century BC.

    Thanks

I know it's a jewelry piece, but I was wondering it was old (1950 or before) or modern.

If you knew it was a jewelry piece (not a coin), why would you post this in "Coin Chat" on the "Coin Talk" forum? Please learn to post non-coin things into the "General Discussion" part of the forum.

    Numismania You hockey puck!!

Exactly!!! Do you know how to do ANY research AT ALL on your own, or do you ask everyone, on every forum you irritate, to grade or identify everything? (God forbid you disagree with those opinions.....so why bother in the first place?). Also, why are you buying something you know nothing about, don't even know if it's a coin, and THEN asking about it on a coin forum?? You SHOULD have burdened those on the World coin forum for starters, as it does look like a tetradrachm, but I'm a U.S. coin person. Oh, that (what forum it belongs in) was covered in the quote from NorthKorea.

Weeeellll ... the first few posts made sense to me, as in: Does anybody know what ancient coin could have been the model for this thing? Ardatirion (in #4) answered that part, it seems. Further discussion about when that piece of jewellery was made should indeed go to the GD forum.

Out of the twenty-five non-sticky threads on the first page of Coin Chat, only nine of them actually belong here. There are one or two that are better suited to a General Discussion, three or so that belong in World & Ancient, and a majority that belong under US. So why do you feel the need to pick on Detecto for it? Actually, as a modern jewelry piece of unknown origin, this coin might actually BELONG in this section!

I tend to agree with Ardatirion. Personally, I don't think I have ever intentionally gone to the General Discussion forum. (I thought that General Discussion was sort of a no-rules politically-charged kind of place). I normally visit Coin Chat, World & Ancient, and if time permits I visit errors & roll searching.

P.S. I also thought it was appropriate that Detecto got back to this thread & thanked everyone for the help & then clarified his question about the piece.

Not quite - "General Discussion" is for OT stuff except politics, religion and world events. For the hot stuff (or was it hotheads? :D ) Peter set up a totally separate site (partisanlines.com). The only problem with GD, or rather with moderators moving topics there, is that it's an opt-in area. So if we moved a topic like this one to General Discussion, some of you may - based on your personal options - not be able to see it any more.

I think that a bit of perspective must be shared on that. Given Detecto's previous posting habits, I viewed the second post more as a "Thanks, but I knew that already." type of post. That's what irked me about it. If he knew that it was a jewelry piece to begin with (meaning, he knew it WASN'T a coin), he should have posted it in a different area.

As for Christian's point about GD being opt in, that's actually my point. I opted in to GD (and I presume Detecto has opted in, as well), specifically, because I know that I often post random things. I don't want to burden those who are actually here to discuss or learn about coins with the random jewelry/collectible/non-coin photography questions, so I post them in GD.

If Detecto knew that the jewelry piece wasn't a coin at all, and his question was originally posted to discover the age of the jewelry piece, then he should have posted it into GD. It's not like he's new to the forum and doesn't understand the rules. Detecto was banned from the forum, as recently as, this past January. He was allowed to return on the pretense that he would learn the rules and follow them.

It might seem like people are "picking on" Detecto, but that's really not the case. It's merely that Detecto posts so often that when a grievance is voiced, it's a cumulative effect of the frustration of his multiple instances of posting non-coin topics in the coin chat section.

May I ask what you think Tim's reason was for starting this thread? Do you think he has a personal interest in this piece and truly wanted to learn something about it, or that maybe, just maybe he intends to sell it and this is another example of his expecting others to do his homework for him? Tim is a big boy now and if he wants to play dealer, or even just buy and sell on the side, he really needs to accept the personal responsibility that comes with it.

I understand that it may look as if some regularly "pick on" Detecto, but he knowingly brings much of it upon himself.

I would guess that some search out detecto's threads for ridicule.

Stop it. This is an ex-topic, as John Cleese would put it. Guess there will always be "borderline" topics which could be in Coin Chat (for example) or in General Discussion. As long as they are coin related, why not post them here? The beginning of this topic was, I think. And then ...
