Reopened eBay Case.

I reopened a case with eBay on a non-delivered item. It was marked erroneously as a delivered item via the tracking number. I had my Postmaster draft a letter, on official postal stationary, acknowledging the error and that the package cannot be found. After 48 hours, eBay sent me an email asking for more time to review. It's now been 5 days since that transmittal. How long would you give them? Has anyone reopened a case, and if so, how long before you heard anything?

How did you determine it was an error? I just had a buyer say she never received her package, but tracking shows it was delivered. She has great feedback so I don't think she is doing anything malicious. My thought is someone grabbed it off her porch. Although I don't feel it is my issue since it was delivered, I had to refund her money as I felt Ebay/Paypal would side with the buyer anyway and to keep my feedback at 100%.

I wouldn't do that, if it's not on you don't throw money away.

Unfortunately I have already refunded the money. What is the general consensus on something like this going in my favor?

I saw the item was out for delivery that day. I was doing yardwork when the mailman came and he handed me my mail but no package. I asked about it and he said he had nothing for me like it. I checked the tracking number and it showed it was delivered but over a hour before the postman even came. I called the post office immeadiately, notified the seller and then eBay. The postmaster talked to the carrier and confirmed the non-delivery, EBay tried to close out the case by saying the post office claimed delivery, The Postmaster General gave me a letter saying that was erroneous information that was posted for the tracking number and the item is indeed lost. I have reopened the case and am still waiting for a reply.

What makes this even more complicated is the seller did not insure the package. He ships everything regular first class mail. He doesn't even offer the option of insurance. I think eBay took the simple route originally. The seller has over 21,000 transactions on eBay. Obviously he pays a lot of fee's. Intern, I have many purchases over the years with 100% perfect feedback. I too spend a great amount of money with them, especially on currency. I have had years where it's been 5 figures at least. I think they are between a rock and a hard place on this one. The item had Buyer's Protection. It's definitely a post office problem but you have no recourse with the Federal Government. Even the postal insurance they offer, is underwritten by an independent third party, because by law they are held harmless.

Someone had to scan the package to show "delivered". That's normally the carrier. He either dropped it or delivered it an hour early to someone else..

Something similar happened to me 4 or 5 years ago. The ebay seller didn't provide tracking info to me and when the item hadn't arrived in five days (he was located very close to where I live) I inquired as to where the package was. He told me that the package had been delivered to me. I told him it was not and asked him for the tracking number and sure enough the package was delivered but at 8:30 in the morning. The postman doesn't come my way till 12:30 or 1PM. I know they didn't make a special delivery for this item because it was regular first class. Anyway, I filed a dispute with paypal and after I explained everything they found in my favor and I received my money back. I think some shrewd postal employee working the sort made off with the item.......

I am waiting on a package now that I got a good deal on, but there is no tracking number. The seller supposedly shipped it USPS Parcel Select. Should this have a tracking number?

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

Don't offer the buyer the option of insurance and expect them to pay for it.
If the package does not get delivered, there is no loss to the buyer.
The seller is at risk if the package is not delivered, so let the seller pay for insurance.
There is no way I'm going to pay to protect someone else's investment.

USPS Parcel Select always has a tracking number (this is included in the price of shipping with this method). Apparently the seller didn't use eBay labels (which automatically uploads tracking info), so you'll have to email him and ask for the number.

  16. Sam: How well do you know your mail carrier? Was your regular carrier on vacation the day of the delivery? I have had several occasions in which my mail carrier (or perhaps someone else at the PO) scanned an item as delivered when in fact it had not been delivered. However, it has always shown up in the next day or two if Saturday. Hope you get this resolved. TC

No argument there. Years ago the sellers used to try and get you to pay for it. EBay now prevents them from doing this.

Unfortunately this is not my case. It was my regular mail carrier I have known for a few years. Supposedly, he retraced his other package deliveries from that day, and no one had it. It's been ten days since the incident and nothing has shown up. That's one of the reasons I asked for the letter from the postal service. But with the lack of a positive response from eBay, I begin to wonder.

Stuff still gets screwed up, maybe the package got scanned at one time "to save time",,,I tracked a package once from Tennessee on it's way here to Long Island NY but then it made a u-turn and went all the damn way to CALIFORNIA and then back to Long island ...stuff happens

Lesson learned. Next time I will let Ebay make the decision, but I find it hard to believe this is something I can control as it was delivered.
