My latest empire - aquisition was really " a hard to come by " - one. 1875 was the year when the Hamburg - mint opened. Hamburg had at last joined the mark - currency in 1874 ( 3 years after the Emire was founded ), in 1874 the City Parlament decided to establish a Mint of there own. When they discovered they had to cover the expenses they almost backed off again, but as a place of commerce cash allways was needed, so there was a strong demand for beeing able to produce coins. After some trial strikes in late 1874 the newborne Mint finally started producing in early 1875 . The first coin struck with the Mintmark " I " ( depicted as J though ) was the golden 10 - mark, followed by the whole run ranging from 1 pfennig to 20 mark.
As I like the Hamburg coins very much I have the idea of putting together the entire 1875 - set( plus the 2 mark of 1876 and the golden 5 mark of 1877 ). Today the dollar size 5 - mark could join in, now I am only missing the 5 and 10 pfennig and the 1 mark to be completed.

Yes, a fine coin. :) Also because the Free Cities were not monarchies and thus did not have the usual kings, dukes, etc. on their coins. Just one addition regarding the status: Hamburg was and still is both a city and a state. In the Deutsches Reich, a city could not have minted "its own" coins (not taking notgeld into account). Bremen, Hamburg and Lübeck however could, as they were states in the Empire.

The Hamburg mint is ooold - in fact, it advertises the fact that today's "J" mint is the oldest one among the current German mints. The first coins were minted in Hamburg (by the bishop) in the 9th century; the city has been minting coins since the early 14th century (brief history in English, more detailed timeline in German). It was the "Great Fire" in 1842 which destroyed much of the city, including the mint, and the decision to set up and build a new mint took more than 30 years. And in 1982 the mint moved to a new location. Unfortunately it cannot be visited ...

Couple new Marks. I was hoping they had some colorful toning since the images were not very good.
Although not colorful, they are certainly nice.

Another empire coin of 1915. To mark the centennial of Mansfeld belonging to Prussia this commemorative 3 - mark was struck. Origionally there where plans to strike 700.000 specimens, but due to the war situaution only 30.000 where allowed. The silver for this issue actually came from the mines at Mansfeld, where prospectoring had a long history back to the time b. C.
The coin shows St. George and the dragon, wich was a traditional motive on Mansfeld coins, on the obverse you can see a modernized eagle. This modell was used on some commemorative issues only, but one can only guess if this is what Empire coins at a given point might have looked like in case there would not have been anny WW I.
