Finally, not a scan nightmare! Is this a common error?

Those are die chips, and yes, they are relatively common errors.
    Keep up the hunt!

Now so do I. At least 8 on the desk. So what was it about 1957 in denver that had all that extra crap on the Cents? And why does it land preferentially on the 9 , 5 & lower part of the B ?? They must have had a machine fail that spit this stuff all over the coins? I should spend some time and compare if any of that crud reproduced exactly, meaning a die error.

What you have to remember is that the letters and numbers are incuse in the die, so the middle of the Bs and the middle parts of the numbers were basically tiny punches of metal that just gave out with all of the striking.

But why 1957 D so much?

The dies were constantly over-used in the 1950s, pretty much until they broke.

Well sure, but 57. Only 57, that is the bunch I have, did I just get a non typical statistical population?

I've found it to be common on all the years from the 1950s. They just overworked those dies. A lot of my searching consists of unc rolls of wheats from those years. I haven't found that one year stands out any more than another.
