Hello fellow collectors! Hope everyone is doing well. I'm thinking about purchasing a Proof Silver Eagle Run, '86-'08, for about $1800.00. Do you think this is a fair price & would this be a smart investment? These would be my first Eagles & wanted to buy a set. Thank you.

No I do not think that would be a smart investment at all.

Ok, thank you. What would be a wise investment w/ regards to silver American Eagles! Also, from whom? Help out the new guy. You were there once. Remember?

It is pretty much accepted by most in the industry that coins in general are not good investments. Coin collecting is a hobby and it should be treated as such. You should collect coins because you like them, not because you expect to make a profit on them. And that is because 9 out of 10 times - you won't.

I would start with buying this set directly from the U.S. Mint. It is available for one more week. I hate to use the word "investment" but the downside risk of this set will be a lot lower than the common proof coins you were considering. The reason being that the mintage will be lower than all of those coins and the enhanced uncirculated has never been made before, so it will be of interest to type collectors.

If you prefer the look of the regular proof coin, you can buy the 2013 directly from the mint. The price was recently reduced because silver prices are falling.

but dear gd you have always told us that one makes or loses money when one buys not sells

both collections? you had 2 collections? which ones ducats and world gold?

And that's true because it would be pretty hard to make money on a coin if you paid too much for it now wouldn't it ?

Uhhh, yeah, 2 collections. I collected US coins for most of my life. But in later years I sold my US collection and decided to switch to collecting world coins, primarily world gold.

By the time you joined this forum spock, I had already sold that collection as well and decided to stop collecting coins at all.

Personally I wouldn't buy ASEs at mint prices. If you have a little patience you can find the same coin in raw condition (or sometimes still in the mint package) two or three years later for a lower price.

Raw means as it is right in front of you. You have the term Raw and the term 3rd party graded/slabbed.

Charleslee, do some serious coin book reading on "Trends" of certain coins in this hobby. You can lose a ton of money if you don't educate yourself better. JMHO. George

Did you not read what I said ?

Is there some part of that statement that you do not understand ? Or is it that you just refuse believe it ?

You should believe it, because it is true. Well, almost anyway. What I should have said was 98 or 99 out of 100 won't.

i am not looking for statements i am looking for the story behind the statement. do you really not understand what i say at all?

in this case it would mean that since you know that money is made when you buy and not sell and yet you made a loss then how did that happen? bad buys, unforseen circumstances, impulse buying, or you just ddint know what you were doing? since you know all about this then it should be none of it, then how? thats where the real learning will take place. let me know if you still dont get it.
