I'm the guy who was "showing my age" which is 35 by the way and "virtual props" which you haven't heard of is where you have a three week long thread of people saying things like they are in this one like "wow, wish I was there" or "lucky, I never find deals like that" or "where is this shop that gives silver away"....it can be addicting to some, which is why people make things up. And I apologized for sounding mean and said it certainly is possible for someone out there do be ignorant I guess as to what things are worth....but I still feel the same.....guess I have been to too many pawn shops (literally hundreds over the years) and have never found a single one since the mid nineties when I started collecting silver that sold under spot. Not a single one.
Nice finds, but I'd say they’re the exception rather than the rule. Just to make sure you’re getting a deal, how many ounces in that 1/2 pound eagle?
Yes, obviously it is labelled 1/2 pound, which is 6 to... I think the price more determines if it was a good deal.
Well yeah, but I've seen people use 16oz/lb, rather than the Troy 12oz/lb - so, if one paid 8 x spot for a half pound, they'd pay for 2 ounces that aren't there.
The second statement clearly contradicts the first. $100 for $134 of silver isn't "just under spot." I really think one of two things is happening here: 1) The guy you're buying from at the shop is clueless and will eventually get fired for all of this. 2) You know the guy you're buying from at the shop, and this is pseudo theft from the shop.
I don't know the guy other than the 4-5 times I have been to the shop but clearly no one else is buying from them. He has told me they pay 50 cents a gram for 999 and less on 90%, as long as I am paying more than that he is happy to sell. If I offered something crazy low, I'm sure he would object. Was in there yesterday and picked up 45 dimes, 18 war nickels and a few more halves.
