I found this a while back during a search of halves. I discovered that it was a gram lighter than a normal half, and had a hollow sound to it. We opened it up, and uncovered the cavity with in. I was able to dig up a bit about "spy coins", but still not sure what to make of it. Can anyone tell me any thing about this coin? Thanks :) IMG_20130514_130252.jpg IMG_20130514_130152.jpg IMG_20130514_130229.jpg

I know I have seen a 1967 UK penny like this in the sold in many of Coffee shops in Amsterdam they called a Hash/stash coin.both are novelty coins.
but could have smuggled a lot on micro film or drugs.
My 20+yrs in the US Army I have been thru custom 25-50 times Not one time did they check my pocket change

It's a stash box for smuggling drugs. Mostly things like LSD, finely ground Marijuana, meth, or cocaine but there are others it's used for too. Need a lot of them to really smuggle much though. Sniff the inside of it, you might be able to smell certain drugs if it's used.

And dont get caught with it open, you might be questioned (especially in states like Florida).

Its a magicians coin. They are very common. I'm sure drug smugglers have a more efficient way of smuggling than putting the most minute Amount of drugs in a hollowed out coin.

But it is used often for drugs too.

I'm not denying it's a magicians coin though as it's most likely used as that too. But what exactly would a magician use it for?

I can't quite tell you because that would ruin the trick. ;)
As an amateur magician, I have had this trick. It often goes by the name "scotch and soda", and involves coins that disappear and "teleport" with the use of a shell coin as well as a coin that has the obverse of a half dollar and the reverse of a centavos or other coin of a similar size.

Oh. Okay. I've never seen that use for it but it must be there then.

Magician's coin? Stash coin? Magician uses to hide his stash coin? Thanks for the non one line replies, guys. I appreciate the detailed responses! :)

Living in the Pacific NW, I probably wouldn't have given too much thought to a hollowed out coin getting me busted. Florida, yep, I can see it now. I once received a shake down for having longish "hippy" hair and a pink grocery sack while in the ol' sunshine state.

Can't tell you the number of times I heard one of my friends in magic spend their "gaff" coins ;) You would have to buy or machine a special ring to actually use this trick. I am a magician and can always use a spare. If you want to sell it, PM me.
