    Nero counermarked

Here is an odd countermark on a coin of Nero:
    Nerocountermarkobvsm.jpg Nerocountermarkrevsm.jpg

Nero, 54-68 AD, 10.09 grams, with odd countermark, which may be barbarous, but is not any known countermark and it is not in letters which are Latin. I don't know what to make of it. Do you have any ideas?

Hmm I couldn't resist to post 2 c/m coins of my fav Roman... Claudius / Britannicus AE23 Thessalonika, Macedonia. RPC 1588... I've seen only very few of this type without c/m...

I also find Valentinian's c/m mysterious and regret not having seen it before.

I'll add the common NCAPR but this one on a Nero Claudius Drusus sestertius.

It looks vaguely like various ancient Semitic alphabets, which have their roots in the even older Phoenician. I see (perhaps) tet or ayin, pe, gimel. I'll have to compare it to my lexicons when I get a chance.

Definitely Semitic. There are a few similar countermarks listed by Howgego, but this does not match.

I can't get all of the marks to align perfectly with any one alphabet, but the stamp is crudely made, and that may be the trouble.

I admit that this coin & countermark are very similar to one of my earlier posts, but I feel that this new purchase is an even nicer lookin' coin!!?

NOTE => I am going to post both of them again, kinda like a pose-down in body-building (Arnold vs The Hulk):

    First, my original Byzantine countermark:

Obverse: Facing bust of Heraclius, monogram-cross beside, all within 9mm countermarked circle, bust of Anastasius clearly identifiable underneath
Reverse Large M from original undertype, mintmark CON overstamped with SCLS mintmark.
