    Nickels are not clad. (They are a uniform 75% copper & 25% nickel throughout.)

    Your nickel has environmental damage, possibly from being buried or being exposed to a harsh chemical. It is not an error.

    Just for fun I am going to weigh it. Were there any off composition units known from that era?

    It's an environmentally-damaged cent. The weight would most likely show a lighter coin because of the environmental damage. It is not an error.
