The dime design has run its course. It's time for something different. Roosevelt is okay, Reagan would be cool, but the torch stalk March of Dimes looking symbol has to go. Many people credit J.R. Sinnock for this design, but it wasn't really his design! This relief was a copy that Sinnock used from an artist bas relief from one of the federal buildings. They just used that relief shortly after FDR's death... The artist that should get the credit for it, should be Selma Burke. It's really her design after all... The overall design front and back concept we credit J.R. Sinnock with... I really believe when they made the overall design, it was more composed than designed... Artist here with 20 years experience.
Thank you for reviving this thread! Every other US coin has been changed in the past few years, I've been wondering when US Mint will decide to mess with the dime...
I think a commemorative dime series, like the state quarters, only we commemorate every entitlement program since the new deal. As far as the size goes, for what we put in, we barely see anyway, so I think that would be appropriate also.
I think it was accidentally MESSED UP long time ago...See this one... A DIME with a PENNY on it! as Doubled Denomination 11c. two full dates 1995 Obverse and more details.
Frankly, as much as I would love a redesign I know two things. 1. The mint would do like they have done with nearly every redesign and ruin it. 2. I like the current design just fine. I know its been around forever but it is one of those iconic designs at this point and I'd rather have it than a redesign of shield-cent caliber.
I was wondering how long it would take for you to post this... It seems no matter what a thread is about... If the thread has anything to do with a penny, a dime, an error, or a valuable coin you end up posting that same coin, and to be honest... it gets really really old.
Yes it is Perfect ! the very first double denomination certified in public at Baltimore Coin Show Convention Center , MARYLAND! On March 2000. Mr. Alan Hager of Accugrade explained it to me NO NEED of Numerical Number as MS ##. Just Penny On Dime 95 -ACG as Mint. Much the BEST in all Doubled Denomination of all time! WOW! There is a proposal to redesign the dime, Ladies and Gentlemen, Miss Liberty. http://numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=26796
FDR will be on dime for a long, long time............. I see one comment for the March of Dimes but I think everyone is forgetting what the March of Dimes is for and FDR having polio himself. Today I don't think anyone gets polio anymore thanks to FDR starting the March of Dimes. FDR on the dime was a match made in heaven when he passed away during WW2. So putting FDR on the dime was a no brainer at the time to remember the longest term President, Great Depression, WW2 and the March of Dimes.....Reagan would be a nice choice but he doesn't have some of the notches in his belt that was dealt to FDR.
Well said Snowman, I think people forget or have never learned what a monumental undertaking it was to find a cure to polio, and how pivotal the March of Dimes and FDR were to that effort. I say keep him on the dime although I wouldn't mind a few Liberties thrown it the mix for old time sake.
If ever you're at a store, and you need 11 cents to make up the difference, you could just give them this and call it a tendered sale. If they try to bust you for giving them illegal currency, you just simply tell them 'If you want to accuse some one of fraud, seek out the government, they were the ones that minted this...' These so called 'Dinny's' can be used any where as legal tender! Dinny = 11 cent coin
I know that it's your expression of a Morgan liberty with Lincoln, but if you look again, you could almost swear it's Clinton.... "I did not have a mintual relationship with that liberty....."
Roosevelt dime 1946-2013=67 years Liberty Head quarter eagle (with only minor mods: Old/New Reverse) 1840-1907=67 years Liberty Head half eagle (no Motto/Motto only design mod.) 1839-1908=69 years Liberty Head eagles (1838-1907)=69 years So the Roosevelt dime in two years will be tied for the longest-running coin series with no major modification, unless I am forgetting something. In the 19th/early 20 centuries, a lot of Americans lived and died seeing only one unchanging design on U.S. gold. Best Regards, :hail: George
