I'm not much of a Lincoln collector, but I did just pick this one up. It appears to be in uncirculated condition. I would like to hear some grade opinions.
That's definitely a 65. Though from what I hear, TPGs don't like woodies, I think they'd give it a 64.
I cannot read luster from your pics, but I think it would go 65 with nice luster and maybe even higher if the luster is that strong. Or lower if there is little luster.
Hello Collector1966; It could very well be a matte proof! The strike is sharp and the rims are flat, and these matte proofs tend to tone like your example. Since all of the attributes bend toward the proof side, I'd go with that. I am no professional though and I am sure you will receive many more opinions from various members of this forum. It is a beauty with monster eye appeal! You have my complete approval on your gorgeous acquisition.
Gbroke; That 1916 S Cent is a stupendous sight to be seen! I would award your coin as an MS65 or MS66. It has a killer strike and eye appeal galore! It has to be the most attractive 1916 S Cent I have ever laid my eyes upon!
Those new cents are doing better in the poll than I thought they would.... I voted for em. I like the old ones too...
Thanks for your opinion. :smile It's not really an acquisition, since I received it from my grandmother 45 years ago. According to her, I am the 4th owner of this coin. The first owner was someone who worked at the Philadelphia Mint in 1909. The second owner was his daughter, a Mrs. (Marcie?) Darge. Mrs. Darge gave the coin to my grandmother, who was a good friend of hers. So this coin is hopefully more than just a run-of-the-mill VDB.
What an interesting and exciting pedigree you have for this cent! I agree that this coin cannot be just a run-of-the-mill coin, I mean why would a worker bring home an ordinary common coin when he would have access to the special ones? It definitely does not look like a common coin & even though the others have claimed it to be a mint state business strike, I feel that it is a specially struck coin like a matte proof! It could even be a uniquely minted one or an experimental striking, thus being the whole reason why he brought it home with him and saved and coveted it for all of those years. I totally feast on it and urge you to research the cent in detail with an expert or two.
Thanks for the grade opinions everyone. I am happy to hear them! RLM, if luster is what will define it as a 65, then I will say it is most likely a 64 as the luster is not too big. Since it seems you guys agree it's MS, I will send it in when my first batch is returned from PCGS. Thanks again!
Certainly looks like an MPL contender to me . The colors are always a good sign as they were wrapped in the paper and produced many beautiful colors. The rim looks square as well. I don't know what the die markers are, if any for the 09vdb are.
Thanks again Now I've got two coin-related things that are giving me stomach butterflies on anticipation of good things to come (Krispy knows what the other one is).
Well nothing really impressive with some of the coins posted but a very special Lincoln Cent to me. It was our first 1909 S V.D.B. that slot had been empty a long time in our album and felt good to finally put that coin in there. I do have plans of upgrading in the future. But will probably always hold on to this just cause it was our first. Dusty
It looks like you have a "Weak D", Die Pair 1 variety. With the '22 Plains, I have read that it is actually preferable to have better detail on the reverse than on the obverse.
