probably a personal question ? how high would you go on buying a great ancient coin ? $1,000-5,000 ???
The sky (and my budget) is the limit :smile The only thing that prevent me from spending 5-10000$ on an ancient coin is that I do not have 5-10000$ to spend...
Amazingly, I now have "167" coins ... only twice have I managed to break the ol' $1000-barrier!! (and I was drunk both times!!)
Batman, your coins are always off the chart, this coin is as awesome as the rest you post, do you own a crappy coin, if you do post it. very nice, very nice..:thumb::thumb: In another thread i saw that you collect minerals, do you or do any of you know anything about old Ivory carvings????
I got this worn and holed Trebonianus Gallus sestertius that I bought at the beginnings of my [ancients] collecting days. Thought it would be something very nice (and appropriate) to wear as a necklace, did so 2-3 days and then felt guilty for the way I treated such an old artefact :axemeethead: Never resolved to part from it... Do not know much about ivory carvings... I sold most of my rocks/minerals/fossils to finance part of my current collection. They were things, mainly, that I picked up on known sites (I broke the suspension of my parents car when I was young after filling it with geodes ).
Thank you for posting your really nice new coin. :thumb: Could you give me a link to the sale? Here is a rock from my small collection. I got it a few years ago when visiting Argentina. Of course, all you rock collectors know it as "Rhodochrosite".
Still a nice coin Batman, i like geodes to, never know whats inside... since were a little off topic, here a few pic's of a ivory tiger craving..My Dad was in WWll, took this from a high ranking official, some think its Chinese, some Japanese, this is an Ancient artifact, i would love your input. He got this around 1942... ( this is preban, and is about 11in. long.)
That's a very nice sculpture Eng ! I wouln't even start trying to outline an opinion as to where and when it was made (I get it that it isn't signed ?), but it sure is beautiful :thumb: Collect89, it's CNG's auction 93 (Great specimen you got there :yes.
'ello governor!! Ummm => hey Batman, that new coin of your s is absolutely awesome!! (great buy ... and a great price!!) => congrats!! Halibut => cool statue Eng => ummm, when and where was that baby made? (it's awesome!!)
Windchild => and the ol' Hippo Otacilla Severa just touched the $1000 mark after shipping costs ... sorry to jump-into your thread Batman, but ummm, it was you that told me that I should buy this Hippo coin (thanks, by the way => I still "love" it!!): Otacilia Severa. Augusta, Æ Sestertius AD 244-249 Secular Games issue., 4th officina. 9th emission of Philip I, AD 248 Rome mint Diameter: 28 mm Weight: 15.99 grams Obverse: Draped bust right, wearing stephane Reverse: Hippopotamus standing right Reference: RIC IV 200a (Philip I); Banti 13 Other:12h … Good VF, dark brown patina, with some red. Ex Robert O. Ebert Collection. Continuing the tradition of Claudius and Antoninus Pius before him, the celebration of the Secular Games at the end of every century since the founding of Rome culminated during the reign of Philip I, as the city celebrated her 1,000th anniversary in AD 248. The legends on these issues almost exclusively read SAECVLARES AVGG, and feature a similar iconography from previous games, such as the she-wolf suckling the twins, the various wild beasts paraded through the amphitheater, and a cippus inscribed for the preservation of the memory of these events
I agree, JA => you guys may have already seen this, but I always think that it's so cool ... => I bought my wife this "1st Edition of The Hobbit"
A really great looking coin. Sometimes you just have to wait for a coin you want enough to come along. I haven't bought myself something "special" for a while and am waiting for the right thing to come along.
