Check out this awesome VF20 example... in an AU50 holder. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1832-Capped...14?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item53eef5b232
WOW! ANACS is very mistake prone. I agree never buy from or submit to ANACS! :thumb: This coin is definitely no better than VF25 on a good day. I feel sorry for the purchaser, if anyone on this beauty.
Why do you say VF-25? Do you think it's possibly a weak strike? Looks nice to me. Liberty is full and clearly legible. Hair curls are nice, her clasp/ribbon is in good shape. The only 'worn' spots are the left wings feathers and obviously 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' which I believe is the result of a weak strike. Any experts wanna comment?
I think it's close to AU. CBH's aren't graded like modern coins. These were made on hand powered presses, not mechanical machines. Look at the photos of these other CHH's I've posted and tell me what you think they grade:
The coin appears to have less wear on it than some believe. As a humorous aside, the images that coleguy has supplied show one coin that was struck on a steam press and that is the 1839-O.
Here's an NGC AU50 with CAC sticker. So this coin has been checked and graded by about 8 professionals. See the huge difference?
The others I posted were all AU graded. 2 by NGC, 1 by PCGS, and 1 by ANACS. All show similar surfaces. Don't feel bad, it took me years of collecting this series to understand the different grading standards. My other passion, large cents, is even more confusing, with having to learn the EAC grading standards. Guy
Experience has taught me that the graders at ANACS, PCGS, and NGC are pretty good. (Typically better than me anyway & I've taken advanced grading at the summer seminar a couple times). I'd need to see the coin in hand. It looks to me that there is more needed to fully describe this coin than a simple 0-70 numeric grade. Edit: Wow, 7 people posted in the time it took me to type 50 words.
I understand that the NGC AU50/CAC coin has a boatload more detail and eye appeal, but I do not know that the first coin has been worn down to VF20 because there appears to be the remnants of mint flow lines near the rims and in the fields. At VF20 these flow lines should be gone or almost entirely gone. CBHs do not all look alike, especially when they may be from different die pairs. Note that I have not checked the die pairs for these coins.
On a side note I have seen several PCGS and NGC coins I do not agree with the grade on - it does not make them wrong, but I disagree with the grade. As for the coin in question I would not buy it based off the scans. That is just my opinion.
Yes, yes, grading is subjective... TPG's are human, etc, etc, but let me change my post to this: Does anyone agree with the AU50 grade of the ANACS coin? Anyone? I was just floored to see that coin in an AU50 holder.
Based on the pic, no I wouldn't. I wouldn't buy the four I posted at that grade either. But, this is how one can get great deals on CBH coins when bought raw. A dealer will sell an AU at AU prices whether you agree with the grade or not. A raw coin I am usually able to out-grade most dealers and get a great coin at a great price. So, yes, there are much nicer looking AU's out there, for sure. Guy
I can't say I agree with it, but I don't see anything major to disagree with either. The issues are with the quality of the strike and not wear so the grade is probably pretty close. Maybe brought down to an XF 45 for other TPGs but nothing is indicating it should drop down to the 20/25 range. This is just one of those cases where you have to look at some other factors besides just the coins overall appearance. I couldn't see myself paying AU money for that coin though. I'm picky on my bust halves so I won't really buy any that are missing letters and look similar to the one in the OP. I have an XF 45 that looks MS compared to the coin we are looking at.
I was just joking around. I see you guys are very attentive! It's an XF, NOT AU coin with a weak strike in my honest opinion. I just don't prefer ANACS
Anacs, Pcgs, Ngc, Cac, ect - I wouldn't buy a coin from any of these, (or combination of these) that I didn't feel was attractive (at any grade). But, I also am not gonna try to out grade the graders. My few years in this hobby certainly do not supercede those who work in the grading room.
If I had the coin in my hand I might agree with the grade. From the image I still think it's really close to AU. They were not made on a modern press. It takes a bit of learning to grade these.
IMO, thats not "really" a fair statement or question since everybody KNOWS that a coin CANNOT be graded from a photograph. Frankly, I think the thread is unduely critical of ANACS as ANACS can and has been tough on certain coin grades and just because the OP happens across an eBay listing of a coin whose grade s/he does not agree with does not reflect well on either the OP or the Grading Service. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions but this particular opinion is without merit unless the coin can be viewed in hand. NO COIN IS A SURE FIRE ANYTHING until its viewed in hand.
