I tend to buy my coins in pairs of two. So here is the other ancient coin that I finally ID'ed. Took me a bit longer but I think I got it right. Greek, Macedonian Kingdom : Philip II 359–336 B.C AE19 / 7.3 grams O: Head of Apollo right wearing Taenia R: ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ, male riding horse right, trident below Reference : Sear 6697
Nice coin. I especially like the reverse. The horse almost looks like a wooden horse made for a merry-go-round. Congrats.
Very cool coin, icerain ... at first, I thought it was a silver coin (AR), but it must just be the the "shine" from the photo-light? => cool colour on the patina I also have one of these, but I have a green version (I love this coin type/style!!) congrats!!
icerain => I agree with your coin-ID (hopefully that makes you feel reassured, rather than making you feel worried?!) Here is my example and the ID is very similar (except for the exergue variation ... you have Trident and I have Spear-head) Philip II AE Unit 359-336 BC Diameter: 18 mm Weight: 6.2 grams Obverse: Head of Apollo right Reverse: Youth on horse right, ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ (FILIP-POU), spear-head in exergue Reference: cf Sear 6696-6698
Yeah the coin is black so I had a hard time photographing it. The flash actually helped in this instance and as far as Id'ing the coin. The owner had Philip III written on the envelope which confused me a bit. And there is a Macedon Philip III coin which looks exactly like this except its got an AY on the reverse instead. I like your coin too, the green patina is very appealing.
