My wife and I went out of town for my birthday over the weekend...we went to Atlanta to see my favorite baseball team (Braves) play and to visit the Georgia Aquarium, both things I have wanted to do for years. We got home on Monday (yesterday). We had a blast. On the way to the airport, my dad called and asked me if I was going to be around on Tuesday (my birthday). We live 100 miles apart and they were going to be passing through on their way to Seattle. He told me he had a birthday present for me..."something that he had wanted to get me for a long time but couldn't afford to do so." So, they stopped by today and gave me this. A 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent. They bought it from a local dealer who called it an XF/AU slider. He also noted a "rim ding" which I assume is the mark at 3 o'clock but it looks more like something on the coin than a ding. Anyway, I'm not an expert at Lincoln grading...but I think the XF/AU range is in the ball park. What do you think on grade?
Nice coin and happy birthday! Hey, I guess we share the same birthday. Grade looks high XF to low AU.
I think it is an AU coin with some problems. BTW, I will bet the "ring ding" is at 3:00, but on the reverse. Personally, I think the blotch on the obverse is more of a problem. Happy Birthday! And congratulations!
Do you believe this coin to be gradable? I'm trying to avoid problem examples in my collection...but then again, it was a gift.
Happy birthday. Nice coin present, it does look to be about AU and there does appear to be a ding by the 9 o'clock area on the obverse.
(In a troll's voice) "IT'S AN OBVIOUS FAKE. CHINESE CRAP. HOPE YOU CAN RETURN IT. UUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH...." jk, it's nice! Happy b-day!!
NICE present and a NICE coin! I agree, EF-45 to AU-53 slider. The rim ding doesn't look too bad, I'd send it to PCGS in a heartbeat. CONGRATS!
Very nice coin and IMO I think it for sure worth getting graded. The color looks nice as well. Happy b day! Now if I could just get my family to do this lol. Dusty
LOL, thanks. I didn't try and get them to do this. I honestly didn't ask them for anything. I was really surprised by this. My dad told me a couple years ago he wanted t get me one as a wedding present but he couldn't afford it then.
Wonderful coin and what is even more Wonderful is that your father gave it to you... Happy Birthday
Beautiful Coin, a joy to look at! You must have a great father to be thinking of you and desire to give you something like this, something that you will be able to enjoy all of your days.
Great coin - congratulations and happy birthday. Consider sending this to NCS first to make sure to remove contaminants - it's certainly worth consideration for a coin like this.
