I know you can go to the bank and get coins (been doing it lately) but wondered if there was a way to find people clearing out boxes of coins (not necessarily bank boxes, but could be just a box full of coins)? Wasn't sure if there was a place for it (don't trust the unsearched stuff on ebay) or if its just kinda a hit or miss thing.

    to hide this ad.
  3. I like you would like to find boxs of coins but the ones ive found are like those on ebay.
Unsearched boxs and rolls on ebay seems as rewarding as finding chicken teeth in the hens nest.
    There are none.

I don;t know that I'd agree with this in that there are some sellers that do in fact sell unsearched rolls. I purchased a roll of 1972-D Kennedys from one fellow and came up with a Top Pop 1972-D No FG Kennedy which I ended up trading for about $1,000 worth of coins.

If you shop around, you can find some unsearched deals and keep in mind that what you are looking for may not be what someone else is looking for. Of course if your expecting to find a 55/55 Lincoln or perhaps an 09SVDB, that ain't gonna happen. But, there are some fairly cool varieties out there and occasionally some nice BU Coins to be had.

You just have to do your homework.

From my perspective, having done the bank search thing back in the 1960-80 era, you need to have progressively lower standards for how many keepers justify going back for more. I did - around the end of that era - place the occasional local ad that I was a buyer for coins. You could try that, but it only takes one bad dude to end your collecting.

I guess simply spreading by word of mouth that you buy coins might find you something. When I was known at work as a dealer/collector, some people would come to see me, sometimes with spectacular coins. The safest thing I did was to offer to appraise collections/accumulations. However, I always felt it was a conflict to wear more than one hat at a time and that it was somewhat unethical (IMHO) to buy coins you were specifically asked to appraise as it was a conflict of interest. So the appraisal fees ended up paying for some coins with no searching involved.
