Last time I checked, forum member illini420 had one for sale in his ebay store. In your price range too, IIRC. Mike is a cool dude and has helped me out before.
At 74K for a MS-62 it would HAVE to be a 1795. You couldn't begin to touch a MS-62 1794 for that price.
I thank all you US guys for coming out and giving me your 2 cents. You guys have presented me with some realistic answers and I appreciate that. If you guys ever end up with some ancient coins, I will try and extend the same courtesy thanks again. I will be investigating all my options and will contact a local dealer which I have helped ID and price some ancients, maybe I can get a deal there too. Once again thank you.
David Lawrence seems to have a nice selection of Bust Dollars: http://www.davidlawrence.com/invent...176,180,185,190,195,200,205/gn/Silver-Dollars
I had the same itch back around 1998-99 or so. I bought a VF20 1799 in a PCGS holder for $650. It's gone up since then...
I got a 1799 Bust "dollar" from what I thought was a reputable dealer, but as it turned out the coin was fake.
I was fortunate to purchase both of these a while ago before prices rose quite a bit. Although each cost more than the $2k limit written about on this thread, neither was near the current price. The Flowing Hair is an EF45 and the Draped Bust an EF40-
I think my 1796 Proof is a fake too. Fortunately it only cost me 10 bucks I keep a couple of these mixed in with the real McCoys. So if they're ever lifted I get a small revenge
Your 1796 proof "half dollar" looks like it might be a Gallery Mint Museum reproduction, http://www.gmmnut.com/gmm/gmmc/ab14sta.jpg as does the 1799 "cent" beside it http://www.gmmnut.com/gmm/gmme/99c.jpg
Oh, I'm so out to lunch Forgot that was a half dollar (they were bigger then)! I don't even belong in this thread Hmm.. now I'll look at some more fakes, thanks for the links ETA: Wow, they have (had?) some scary stuff. Anyway definitely not the source of my half, just look at the denticles for instance. I wish I knew of a place to get good fakes (stamped COPY of course)--even if it's sacrilegious around here I find them interesting (though I only have two). I'd pay up for one of these, if it were convincing. Sorry to veer so far OT, I'll say no more Or, maybe I should buy the real thing. I mean, just look at the price!
There is a difference between fakes and reproductions. Fakes are meant to deceive collectors, while reproductions are supposed to be sold with the explicit understanding that they are not genuine. The Gallery Mint Museum made both faithful and fantasy reproductions, and duly stamped all of them with the word COPY as required by law, so there was nothing illegal about what they were doing.
Absolutely beautiful scottish! I'm jealous! I think I'm becoming very interested in early american silver dollars :hail: "A Slab cannot reflect a coins true beauty, unless it's an NGC Slab"....j/k
Both are gorgeous Tom. To the OP, both of these are now running a minimum $12k. These are super examples.
