I'm getting to the point where I need a way to store my slabs other than just piling them up in the area I keep all of my coins. I'm thinking storage boxes like the NGC ones would be best. I have a couple questions. 1) Where would be the best place to get an NGC storage box for the best price? I've seen them on eBay for around $15 with free s&h, that doesn't seem too bad. 2) Would a generic box hold up better or worse or about the same over time than an NGC box? Such as this one on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/EZ-View-Slab-Display-Box-for-PCGS-NGC-ICG-ANACS-Holder-Storage-/110892192714?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d1b093ca 2.5) After the shipping costs it's only $1 less than NGCs, but if I could find one of those with free s&H would that be a better choice in the long run?
I'd go with the NGC both. I had similar questions last year. For durability, longevity, and just overall quality go with NGC. The NGC boxes are also able to hold pretty much every type of slab, NGC, PCGS, ect. So go with NGC and bit the bullet for quality and you'll do just fine.
$15 each seems a bit high to me. I prefer the PCGS or NGS boxes over something more generic. IMO, you should be able to find these boxes more in the range of $7 - $9/each. Check this out (not sure of condition based on pictures). . . http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-PCGS-Coin...768?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f246965d0
I always buy the NGC boxes new from eBay. I think I usually pay $13.00 shipped but it's been probably 6 months since I bought my last one. The prices I see on eBay today are $15.00 shipped. The NGC boxes are definitely more money than the PCGS blue boxes, by around ~$4.00. I also paid for a nicer aluminum box for my "box of 20", (holds 25), which I like a lot. That goes for ~$35.00 shipped. Expensive, but I only intend to buy that single one.
The NGC boxes tend to be the preferred boxes because they will hold most everyone's slabs, the PCGS won't hold NGC's well. The problem is that NGC no longer sells their boxes (PCGS still does) so as time passes the NGC boxes are going to be harder to come by.
I use the Whitman boxes. Cheap and they hold up fine. http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/whitman-double-row-slab-crown-box.html
They fit but not tightly and tend to move around when traveling. My concern is if they can scratch up the slabs when moving long distance.
You guys might want to check this link - http://www.jpscorner.com/coin-slab-storage-boxes.html - NGC and PCGS boxes both are less than $9 each. And they've the other kinds for under $4 each.
Your local coin shop may be able to supply boxes for significantly less than buying them online and they might even give them to you for free.
YOu can call NGC and order boxes directly from them. Chris (CPM9BALL) ordered 10 with me. We split the costs down the middle.
I buy a lot of items from Coin World. I believe there website is amosadvantage.com. They have all kinds of options for storing your coins. I just got an email saying they have free shipping for $35 or more.
I prefer the NGC box. PCGS' box only fits their coins. Go figure. I own one of the old single row Intercept Shield boxes too. They no longer make them, but they don't hold NGC coins very well. When it gets full it bulges. I've twice bought a 6 pack of NGC coin boxes on eBay for around $48.
