Sorry to say, but I am pretty sure you have a cast counterfeit. There are a lot of missing berries on the reverse, in addition to the reverse having a porous look common on cast coins.
Where did you buy it from and how much did you pay? I ask about price because if it is a fake it still has some value. I am sure others will be along to chime in, but there appears to be berries missing under the R in AMERICA there should be one on each side of the wreath, and underneath the T in UNITED. It is certainly appears to be an S76 die pairing as it does not match any other known 1795
local coin shop, I know them well, was part of an estate - also got the 1798 i posted earlier today from there - $400
I would say counterfeit or heavily tooled at best. There isn't even a pole above the bust. The 5 isn't embedded. Bottoms of the 9 and 5 look like buttons. It just doesn't have the feel of being right.
better pics so the others were scans, here is are pictures from my phone...As far as no pole on the front, the half cents had that variety...why not on the large cent? So now that we have nailed this thing down to either a fake or a million dollar coin /sarc, any thoughts on these pictures... I just cant see the attention to detail (high quality front) in the fake to miss the freaking pole.... I dunno...thanks for the responses thus far... edit: if i tip it in the light, there is a bend in the light where the pole should be...so almost like it is very faint...
could this be a legit old reproduction? It was in an inherited estate with a handful of other large cents that appeared to check out and a bunch of junk silver...so it appears to have been held for some time...
You'll have to excuse me. I consider legit and reproduction as mutually exclusive. I've looked at countless 76b's and this just doesn't look right. But you have the coin in hand and I don't. You asked for opinions and that's what I gave. Do with it what you will.
I agree that it looks like a cast counterfeit - pitted, mushy details, etc. But I can't say it definetly - I would get it to someone to validate it, as marshall mentioned it could be someone dorked with it in some fashion or shape. Just my humble opinion.
so here is what is driving me nuts...there is a version with a very faint pole and a soft reverse (to the point of looking like it is missing berrys) and has the 95 with the bubbles and 9 and 5 hooks...except that it is the lettered edge... crazy http://www.ebay.com/itm/1795-Letter...31?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item35c70d839b
The S-74 has a double leaf under O in OF, your coin does not. The only possible variety your coins resembles is S76, and it appears to be missing a lot of detail. The mushy details, porous look, and cheap price you purchased this for all point to it being a fake. Rundown of elimination for variety: S73 - 5 clear of bust, double leaves under D in states. Your coin has the 5 touching bust and triple leaves under that D S74 - hair/forehead junction is under left side of T in LIBERTY, double leaves under O in Of. Your coin has the junction of hair/forehead under center/right side of T and single leaf under O in OF. S75 Same obverse as S74, reverse has double leaf at tip of right wreath, your has a single leaf S77 - double leaf directly under F in OF, you coin has this double leaf between the F and A. S78 - 5 clear of bust, one cent centered on reverse, your coin has one cent high. S79 - 5 clear of bust, double leaf on top right wreath. s80 - jefferson head NC1 - jefferson head NC2 - point of one distant from curl of hair, your coin has the point of one close to the end curl of the hair. NC3 - one cent centered NC4 - jefferson head. Which leaves the S76 variety, which the reverse of your coin matches except for what appears to be the lack of berries. If it's real it's an S76, but it looks fake to me, sorry.
So it just got put in the return mail from PCGS VF Details 98 Damage...They are calling it 76b...what would you folks think it would be worth in that condition? I really appreciate the help here. You all have been very helpful in my quest to learn more about the large cents.
Congrats. I can't put a price on because they seem to be all over the place on heritage for details coins.
