Hello everyone, Has anyone experienced cracked gaskets with coins graded my PCGS? It appears that my 2006 reverse proof ASE has five cracks in its gasket. Are cracked gaskets common? Any recommendations? Thanks everyone for your time!
Thanks for the info. guys! Is a cracked gasket a safety issue for the coin or is it just a matter or aesthetics?
The gasket just stabilizes the coin so it doesn't rattle around in the slab. It's not urgent to have it repaired, but if you ever plan on selling, it would be a good thing to do.
The slab wasn't cracked. I actually used this coin as the subject of a photo contest. There were close to 30 participants located in over 20 states. This coin was passed around for almost 9 months with out a problem. It wasn't until the last 2-3 stops that this problem appeared. It looks like the slab was placed too close to a light source which partially melted the gasket......at least enough to permanently misshape the gasket. The coin and new slab are now resting comfortably.
yes, that's what I meant. not that the slab was cracked, but that it was the pic of the faulty gasket, not the new slab.
I heard the gasket begins to collapse under exposure to heat. So if this coin was left on the dash of black pick-up in the middle of El Paso, that could have contributed to the "cracking" (I'd call it retracting or collapsing).
hey Robec, should I post my cracked gasket penny? LOL! http://www.cointalk.com/t217715-18/#post1600059
In your case, the gasket was the only thing that wasn't cracked. The PO did a bang up job with the slab.
Yep... LOL! But damn if it didn't come back better than ever....and it even started me on getting additional Lincoln cents... Got 7 in my collection now.... Thanks again!
