I've been searching in the forum with no luck. For some reason I remember reading about how the old small Anacs holders would generally crossover to NGC and PCGS and also had the probability of getting raised a grade. Is this true or is it the roll of the dice like everything else.
Yes it is often true that they cross and yes it is true that more than a few upgrade. But it is by no means always true in either case.
Many coins still in the old ANACS slabs won't upgrade. If it hasn't been done by now it's most likely that the previous owners decided it wouldn't happen.
Then i guess it will be a gamble. The coin is a 1928 peace dollar. The person who has it bought an original roll of them and Had them graded by Anacs years ago. They were all graded 63 and 64. The one I would be buying is a 63 for a decent amount back of greysheet. The issue Is I'm in a different state now and would be buying blind
If you're buying the coin a decent amount back of greysheet - not sure how you could go wrong - assuming you trust the seller. If you're buying a 63 for less than 63 money and it won't upgrade - you still did good. Just my opinion
My question is does he have any more? I would like a nice ANACS example of one in a higher grade. I have 2 28s now, but would be interested in another.
Roll of the dice. These holders have been picked over pretty well over the years, just like the old PCGS rattlers, by folks looking for upgrades or a straight cross at a reduced price.
That makes some sense, but my view point on these holders is that they were fairly accurately graded and you can usually pick them up at a reduced price to NGC and PCGS in the same holders. After seeing some experiences here on CT, i dont take much consideration on a 1 grade point differential. Ive seen details holders from PCGS come back as no problem NGC's (i believe the latest example i can remember was maybe TheLostDutchmans old gold coin) After i seen that thread, my being picky over one number grade to the next lost all meaning. So now i just happily pick up those small ANACS at a reduced priced for a fairly accurately graded coin. Works out well for me, since i dont really plan to squeeze the last living piece of profit out of a coin by crossing and such. I only cross them for aesthetic reasons at the moment. Like PCGS to NGC holders or ANACS to NGC holders for uniform sets, etc. So basically with grading being so subjective anyway, I would say its a roll of the dice as well, and the ANACS white holders are good value buys.
Trey. Yes 19 more to be exact. It will be the first from the roll He has sold. Not sure if he wants to sell more or not Tom, the nice thing is i know it hasnt been picked over which is why im seriously considering the purchase. Yacorie, it being anacs scares me which is why im asking about the old holders
Don't be scared of the small ANACS, they were graded back when they were actually known to grade accurately. Plus you are already getting a discount anyway so you're good there. I do have a question for the more savvy on this topic. Were these small ANACS coins graded before we started seeing market acceptable grading from the likes of the other TPGs. That single question probably will tell us alot concerning these slabs. I can't tell you I've been happy with them, you still need to look at the coin though. Does he have pictures?
I think there is no good answer to this. In general the grading of ANACS small white holders was fairly accurate. The problem with the small white holders is the fact that in recent times there has been a market where "everyone" wants PCGS graded coins. The high demand has caused many ANACS coins to be attempted. It is starting to get to the point where small holder ANACS coins are typically only still in the small holders because they previously failed to cross. I don't recommend buying small white holders from a big dealer or large auction company like Heritage. These coins are likely ones that would not cross or did not cross. Also NGC does not cross ANACS coins. They "remove" them first and consider them as raw and make you sign a release. They only do crossover service on PCGS coins. PCGS will do crossovers though
The ultimate way to solve this problem would be to CAC'em, but I don't think the do ANACS coins do they? They should make an exception for the small white holders if they don't.
At one time I had about 35 old Anacs graded Walking Liberty Half Dollars sent to Ngc. only about 3 changed grade wise 2 went up and 1 went down. That was 2002 today??? I think its the grading staff @ Ngc or Pcgs not wanting to give the Green Bean folks 1 more to add to there Pop?
That should tell you something right there. Only one coin went down in grade on 35 submitted, that's pretty strong in my opinion and reiterates the fact that these coins grades are accurate at least and can be bought for cheaper money due to new collectors not knowing these holders are on par with NGC & PCGS and people just passing them by. I scoop them up on a regular basis and have only been disappointed once, more to bad pictures than their grading. All in all, their grades seem to be solid compared to NGC and PCGS
One problem is that when you talk about the "old small ANACS holders", you are talking about a GROUP of holders that date from 1989 through 2005, and go through more than half a dozen varieties, and three different owners. Some are from the "conservitive grading" period, but most are not.
