My first of the Twelve Caesars!

    Nero (ruled 54-68 AD)
    AE Sestertius

    Struck 65 AD
    NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P
    Laureate bust right.
S - C in Field, ROMA in exergue
Roma with parazonium and victory, seated left.
    34 mm, 26.53 g
Extra: No Tooling or Smoothing, much better surfaces in hand

    I believe it is:

    Lugdunum Mint (Modern Lyon)
    RIC 398

    or

    Roma Mint (Modern Rome)
    RIC 273

This coin is the start of a collection of one coin per ruler, from Julius Caesar to Commodus..

Historical Notes! (You're welcome Steve ;))

    The reign of Emperor Nero....
Friend of the Commoners (who loved him) and Enemy of the Senators (who hated him)

Specifically, 65 AD... The Year of the Consulship of Nerva and Vestinus.

Rome was rebuilding after a massive fire in 64 AD, during which Nero was rumored to 'fiddle while Rome burned' (inaccurate)

This year, Nero kills his pregnant wife, Poppea Sabina, with a kick to the stomach.

Also, after a stage performance in which he appears and shocks the senatorial class considerably, Nero engaged in a series of reprisals against Seneca, Tigellinus, pro-republican senators, and anyone else he distrusts.

Thanks! (You know who you are ;)... You can say if they want to)

    Thanks All!

Exactly why I got it :D

I wanted something big that fit one of the four collections I was aiming for and had some history behind it...

Hard to find a good fit, but this one is great :D

    What?

My most expensive ancient, but worth it ;)

    PM me where...

    Thanks :D

    Hot-diggity-dawg!! => that coin rocks!!

=> oh, and thanks for the Ruler-info, my wise & young friend (yup, it's always nice getting a wee slice of info)

Ummm, so that's Number-1 of Twelve (a sweet-n-huge Sestertius) ... curious, are they all gonna be big bronze babies, or do you have any set-rules on your collection yet?

=> keep-up the fantastic work => you're rockin' this joint!! (oh, but don't forget to go outside every now and then, ride your bike, and chase some chicks!!)

    ;)

Hey gang => curious, I know that there aren't really any set-rules on collecting the 12-Caesars and/or collecting any coins, "but" what actually "counts" in most people's books as a "credit"?

... ummm, for instance, does my crocodile with Augustus & Agrippa count as an Augustus-credit? .... ummm, or does my Augustus quadran count? (it doesn't have a bust of anybody on it!!)

    => just askin'

    Thanks

    Forgetting something Steve?

    I wrote it from memory...

This year is of major importance in the History of Nero...

Each metal represented once (Julius to Commodus).

Depending on the ruler, I will chose the metal.

I haven't finished yet, but will post when I decide on the metals for each ruler.

For my set, only the croc would count (as a 'bonus' piece)

It's supposed to be Roman Imperial Coins with a bust.

Wow! That is one sharp looking coin. Well done Wind Child.

I'd say as long as it has a prominent bust of them, imperial or provincial, it would count (except for Julius Caesar, any coin of him would fill his slot in my collection). At least, that's how I've set up my 12 Caesars. For example, my Augustus from Julia Traducta, I consider it as fulfilling my Augustus slot.

Traditional wisdom attributes coins with a ball on the point of the bust to Lyon and those without it to Rome. I do not own a Lyon sestertius but show a dupondius here. I also show my only Nero sestertius which is not as nice as yours.

ahahaha => yes sorry, I did forget that you sent me that e-mail a week ago (your coin is even more cool than you described!!)

... ummm, did you find out if you were accepted into that engineering course?

I think any goal you set would be fine. In my case, my goal was to obtain a silver denarius of each of the 12. But you could just as easily have any metal, provincial or whatever.

BTW, the "bid" was suppose to be "big". Sorry about that.

  19. Gil-galad

    Gil-galad I AM SPARTACUS

My goal is to collect every Roman Imperial ruler I can find, including Caesars, wives, children, friends, etc.

Nothing wrong with that Gil, but you could have a sub-collection goal as well. i.e., the 12 Caesars, the Five Good Emperors, etc.
