I have 11 ASE proofs to finish off my collection of proof ASE's (excluding the 1995 of course). I haven't made up my mind as to what to start on next. I will say that my favorite coin ever is the St. Gaudens Double Eagle. That eagle on the reverse is something else. Now, this particular coin is way out of my price range. I thought it would be fantastic if the Mint brought back that design and made a Silver Proof out of it. High relief. Never happen, but it would be a great, great coin I think.
Eh, I am just tired of them bringing back old coins. How about wishing for them to create coins AS GOOD as them? How about wishing they would spend the extra $.50 a coin and make collector coins in high relief again? Bringing back beautiful old designs and having them struck in low relief is simply depressing for a myriad of reasons. I am with you, I really am, I lover the eagles on the back of the SG, WL Half, and SG eagle, I am just afraid the mint would completely bugger them up if they even tried.
You are very right, it is very beautiful. I find reverses to be underappreciated generally. I like them a lot, but maybe that is because I am sick of looking at dead presidents.
The obverse on the SGE is good. The eagle on the reverse is what I really, really like. A high-relief silver version would be a big hit for collectors I think.
