Information obviously trickles down from one coin owner to the next. I am confused about how I should date this NEWP.

    Sear states 196-146 B.C.
Heritage (Lot # on Website) stated 146-60 B.C.
Seller (Eye Appealing Coins) stated 160-146 B.C.
Previous owner (La Galerie Numismatique) stated 196-146 B.C.

Can I get a ruling on this coin’s date from you guys please.

That is one of the best looking ancients I've ever seen. Congratulation on an awesome NEWP.

The BCD catalog dates these coins to the Late 2nd-mid 1st century BC and calls the staters. I think that name makes much more sense than the Latin "victoriatus." Struck by the magistrates Hippolochos and Philon - the top line of the legend actually reads ΦIΛ-ΩN*. Citation - BCD Thessaly II 869.2

I want to thank everyone for the kind words about the coin and especially thank those that were able to help with the date & attribution. :thumb: :smile

I'll probably start a thread depicting all my Greek coins & how they are displayed & described. It is a small collection now & this would be easy to display & ask questions now.

I tell you man, I remember when you just started getting into ancients, and I have to say you have a nice eye.

    Very nice stater.

I agree he's got a great eye, which many don't develop for years in the field.

It's a shame the coin can't be dated more narrowly. Larissa has a rich history during that range.

Give me a fat wallet and I'll show you a great eye. Not to take anything away from Collect89's choice of coin, but if you have the means to buy an EF coin with good provenance, you don't need much of an eye.

The collector with a good eye, in my opinion, is the one that can spot something unusual and intriguing that everyone else has missed.

Seeing as the coin has a magistrate on it with further advanced research the date could probably be narrowed down...????

=> yah, I strongly agree ...... ummm, but I also think that money can't buy good taste

=> Even if a dude has a fat wallet, they still have to search-out and find themselves some cool coins (apparently not everybody seems to have this skill?) .... ummm, but I guess one man's cool is another man's junk-drawer, eh?

Yeah, I'm not suggesting otherwise. That coin is absolutely gorgeous.
