1850 Large Cent NGC MS66BN

I think the copper specialists dub this color as "mint red". I think it suits it just fine!

I would call it "mellowed mint red", but I can also be kind of anal too.

I had a dream once where it was 1850 and I went into a store to buy and 8¢ cigar. I paid with a dime and the cashier said, "Wait, I'll get your change".

The cashier pulls out a fresh roll of large cents from under the counter (like a roll of quarters), cracks it open on the edge of the register, then dumps the coins into the tray.

He then gives me two (2) coins just like the OP (only more red and cartwheel-ie).

 

Dumb question but what is CAC?

I wish you the best, but there is only 4 stickered at this level in the CAC pop report. I think NGC is a little more liberal in large cent grading and more often than not, CAC disagrees. However, if they sticker (particularly at this grade level), you will certainly have added value!

edited to add: I love the look of your coin, especially the coloration!

 

We sent in 6 of the pieces to CAC including this one. I will let you know the results once I find out.

 

What a beauty. I just spent two days looking for a large cent just like this—at the Michigan State Numismatic Society (MSNS) Spring Convention in Dearborn. I didn't find it, although I did see quite a few over-graded, overpriced NGC 65s and 66s, as Leadfoot said.

The nicest piece I came across was a stunning, immaculate '37 plain cord in an NGC MS64BN holder (wish I had photos). Tom Reynolds, of Omaha, whom I met for the first time, had it and was asking PCGS 65 money. In that holder, I just couldn't pull the trigger, probably against my better judgement.

Can't make the Central States show (this one had to suffice) or I'd look you up!

 

Tom's a heck of a nice guy, and a fountain of knowledge, but you're not going to find many "deals" in his cabinet. I'm not sure finding "deals" is in anyone's best interest, and you're going to have to pay up for nice coins. The challenge is figuring out which are really nice and which simply have a nice price tag, if you catch my drift. Good luck...Mike

 

p.s. Matt, you know I like you and Rick. You both have great eyes for coins. Unfortunately, I give this coin about 1.3% chance of getting a CAC sticker. Doesn't make it a bad coin -- to the contrary it is very, very nice -- but it does mean that from what I've been able to gather, JA simply doesn't like these coins in 66. I'd also wager the ones he has stickered were graded by PCGS not NGC. That said, I'm rooting for you and hoping I'm wrong!!!!

 

I don't get to make many large shows so it was a real pleasure meeting and getting to talk with Tom for quite a while (it was a slow show and his table was particularly slow). You're right, he's a nice guy, unassuming, and very generous with his knowledge. I learned quite a bit. He had a friend assisting him who was also quite knowledgeable.

I've given up long ago (relatively speaking) finding "deals." It's hard enough finding decent coins and no one's going to let them go for average money. I absolutely get your drift! You couldn't have said it any better.

Given Heritage's EAC grade and what I think is tremendous eye appeal, I put in what I thought was a very healthy bid. Suffice me to say that I didn't lose by much—but I did lose.

It's there along with 5 others. Just waiting to get the word.

 

My guess is that it would fail the process due to the color.

 

Sadly this coin did not CAC tho 2 of the others in the order did including a 1852 in 66BN.

 

Dang. Why do you think it didn't (and the others did)?
