I barely know anything of Canadian coins, but it seems like copper that was AT with heat. I need a more expert opinion.

the bronze ones seem much more rare in my catalog for this coin.

How would I know with certainty?

'Copper' is an element, and rarely used without an alloying metal to increase wear-ability and/or improve appearance. I'm about through cleaning any coins but bullion (just to refine the process), so this is just as-found...raw, I believe the correct term is.

It is far more red than yellow; both surfaces are splotchy-coated with what looks to be an oily dark green hue...not the bright blue-green of verdigris. Short of an invasive analysis I'm not sure the metal can be accurately ID'd.

I'm curious as you are, though, about the possibility of it being the rarer of the two. I'll dig out pics of the 1850, but I'm pretty sure it is, like this one, redder than yellow.

Very lovely...you gotcher money's worth, obviously!

I see, now, the Union Jack in the quadrant...it must wear quickly, as neither of mine show even a hint of the geometrical in that area. Yours is really crisp and sharp!

The token is completely blue and red indoors. i took it outside and took the pic with an angle so you can see the metal. It looks alot like my bronze ZAR pennies.

wIwhittier, it's probably copper. do NOT clean it. you will KILL the value if you clean it. leave it as is.

Yes, I do not clean coins. My copper pattern coins are much darker? Anyway, it is in nice shape and has some nice eye appeal.

Picked up a very nice 1817 George III Shilling. The luster is blinding in hand.
