Charlie Davis, Paul-Francis Jacquier, and Kolbe & Fanning. David Sklow also has some good auctions, but that's primarily US stuff. I find my best deals on books are found through occasional and random searches on bookfinder.
Sorry dude, I can't help ya regarding thrifty book-deals ... I usually pay through the nostrils via ABE Books
Books are even worse than coins. The best deals are from people who think that they will never find a buyer for a 50 year old book on 2000 year old coins. The worst deals are from those who know that there has not been any better book published and there are several people in line looking for that title. Bargains were easier to find before the Internet connected all the used book sellers but those willing to pay now have a better chance of finding the book they want so we have to take the bad with the good.
Along with Bill's list, Lake books occasionally has some titles, (right JA?). I search Ebay both under the general book category for coins, as well as books and publications section in coins. Other hints? Amazon can have some good books, and don't forget other country Amazon's are not connected to Amazon.com, so checking amazon.ca or amazon.co.uk can lead to some good prices as well. Let's see, oh and Scott Semans has a good book list. He is www.coincoin.com.
Here's the link. I didn't post it yesterday because an auction was ending at 5 and I had a bid in for the Meshorer Nabataean Coins. http://www.lakebooks.com/ But this guy only does mail bids - email and phone is good too. It's old-fashioned, but what can you do if there's a book you want? I haven't found out yet whether I won.
I am frustrated to have missed what looks like a great auction, and yet delighted that my beleaguered budget can survive until May.
My fav site for numismatic books is www.abebooks.com ... Always found what i needed ;-) and if any of you is looking for auction catalogues, please PM me. i got over 3000 in stock (please note i do live in Belgium, shipping to the US can be expensive !)
Well, it would appear that I've won lot E 47, the Meshorer Nabataean Coins. I've got an email out to Fred to verify. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
It's about what I expected, after the buyer's fee and s/h. The last available one (that I know of) sold on vcoins for $90. In fact, I was worried that a $100 bid was too low, but I'm not made out of money. Still, I'm not dancing a jig yet - I'll save that for when I've got it in hand.
I also found a pdf download of George Francis Hill's Catalogue of the Greek Coins of Arabia, Mesopotamia, and Persia in the Royal British Museum. There's a decent section on Nabataeans there, and a bucket-full of other interesting coins and descriptions.
