Ref Plautia 13 denarius; Refers to the Victories of Pompey over Aristobolis.

I'm jealous. I love these coins with Cybele

We have in the past featured a related type showing the submission of king Aretas III (I believe). To a Roman, any kneeling Eastern king is a good Eastern king from a coinage standpoint.

    M. Aemilius Scaurus and Pub. Plautius Hypsaeus, AR Denarius, 58 BC. The Nabatean king Aretas kneeling right, offering olive branch, camel right beside him. Reverse: Jupiter driving quadriga left, scorpion right below horse's legs. Craw 422/1b; Syd 913

Steve types faster than I do.

I love them all, and I have a couple interesting ones to share in the next few days. Nice coins Jerry and Doug.

There was no submission. In a typically sly Nabataean chess move, Aretas III bribed Scaurus to leave even as the Romans were being recalled, setting up a precedent should other generals want to increase their billfolds by ignoring the wily Arabs. The coin is pure propaganda.

steve and doug thanks for showing your coins, interesting that such near matching designs should appear on different coins just a few years apart..must be same designer ?
