    Here's a video of my French friend Georges Depeyrot, author of many books, and a faculty member of the French National Center for Scientific Research... 'History of Roman coins'... Enjoy !

    I watched about 15 minutes of it. I will finish it later. So far it's kinda rudimentary.

    Yes, it was rudimentary, but entertaining nonetheless. Thanks for posting it.

    Copyright March 1999 at the end. Certainly this is worth the half hour to watch but it is hardly what I would title a History of Roman Coins. Much of the time is taken up with clips from old movies and deals with cultural history but there are some nice shots of a hoard in place and a conservator using a Dremel tool to polish the coins. I suppose it makes no difference since the coins will spend eternity in a museum basement now? It is well covered how the amount of coins issued grew during the third century and how the amount of silver in each fell. It might have been nice to do the math to compare how the total silver in the coinage compared and the effect this had on the purchasing power of a gram of silver but this is only a half hour piece designed for people who know nothing about coins and history so it is really a great success for what it was meant to accomplish.

    Thank you for posting the link.

    The only problem was the annoying music.

    Hi Doug,

    Earlier today I posted a new thread about fake coins, and by the reactions I had, It seemed like several people were not so happy to collect ancients, because of all the fakes... So I posted this -basic- movie, to encourage them :D... Ancients are fun, ancients are pieces of history, with still lots of new types and varieties to discover... It's great, as long as one does use several resources online, and good reference books, 'feel' the coins... I'm collecting since 1974, never regret it for a moment !

    Annoying music ??? Man, this was a top 10 hit in April 78 AD ! It's a golden oldie... :p

    The worst part about the fear shown in that other thread was the opinion that there is some safety in a slab. I'll allow for some likelihood that David Vagi and friends will filter out the fakes but the other brands of plastic strike me as worse than Raw because it is harder to examine a coin inside one of their slabs and I do not trust them to know more about it than I do. Most of the fakes you showed were not really deceptive style but I know that some of them would certainly fool an amateur like me.

    I am generally more afraid of pressure casts and tooled coins (above) than of fakes from copy dies but I know I can be fooled by many versions of the black arts. It is good to see fakes not only identified as fake but as to which type of fakes they are. The dies are interesting (but I would not buy one).

    Rudi => thanks for posting the movie ... I thought it was quite interesting (sure, I knew quite a bit of the info already, but it was nice having that pleasant lady with the nice voice describe the whole sequence of events ... I never get sick of that kinda stuff!!)

    => thanks again

    You probably think that sexy voice on the other end of that 999 number you called is a 21 year old vixen. More likely a 64 year old grandma.

    Rudi: I finished the movie. Thanks for posting.
