I'm into coins, and enjoy finding small note money at work in circulation. I have found some from the 80's, more are newer, with low serials. Are they worth holding onto for value? Lowest I have found is with (3) 0's. Other than keeping them because I enjoy finding them, are they worth anymore than face? As an example, I found a 1988 $100 with 2 zeros today, want to get back a hold of it.
I would say that 5 leading 0s is when notes start getting desirable. Anything less than that is neat but not really worth a premium.
Yeah, I have found a few online selling a bit over face with 2-3 zeros, but I enjoy finding them. I count money sometimes at work and am always looking at serial numbers
What constitutes a low serial number... ...to a purist = 5 leading zeros ...to the average collector = 4 leading zeros ...to the average eBay bidiot = first digit lower than 3.
Yea I find all mine in circulation. They are pretty hard to come by. I figured most online are from stacks people buy and sell separate. I just wondered how many currency collectors keep small notes if they find them in circulation. I keep them if I find them, and most have either 1-2 zeros
I had a huge hoard of star notes that I found in circulation...and I ended up cashing most of them in and using that money to buy a couple nice notes for my collection. That being said, my currency collection consists of 26 notes total now. 23 of those notes are small sized notes and 20 were circulation finds (19 by me and 1 by another collector who I traded with).
Yea even if its worth $5 more or $1000 more than face, it only cost me face so that is why I will end up keeping all of them. I can afford to hold onto a $5 or $10. I ended up getting that $100 and to me, its an extra way to save money. I know I will never get rid of it, but its still $100
