Hello. I got this French coin of King Louis 14. It is dated 1658 , but I cannot find the mint mark nor the privy or the name of the engraver. Appreciate any opinion. Thank you all . Charles
I don't see it, Doug. The Latin phrase is SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM. Is in in that messed up spot between the "I" & "B"? I think this is a jeton rather than a coin. The Paris Mint was producing many different Louis XIV jetons during his reign. Chris
Thank you GD and CP . The mint mark " I "should be between the last letter I of Domini and the letter " B " . That is the reason behind confusion. I mean the two letters " I " of the MM and Domini are supposedly close to each other. Unfortunately, the coin was holed too close to the MM. The mint mark might not be an "I". I can see a privy mark on the right of date. It is like a dog or cat heading right ?
Chris is right, I just looked at it quickly instead of actually looking at it. The mint mark is between the I and the B, right where it is supposed to be. But it is an & (ampersand), the mint mark for Aix. Now if you can tell me how big the coin is, or what it weighs, I can tell you what the denomination is.
