And there you have it... I honestly do not think some understand the amount of nonsense some dealers have to deal with, so until one has been in their shoes, it is best not to jump to conclusions or to judge a book by its cover.
well he sort of contradicted himself . First he "changes prices every week" then he looks in a 2 year old reference (the 2012 book was out in 2011). beginning business relationship with an untruth is a bad practice
I know a dealer that doesn't have the prices listed on the coin. He basically makes up a price on the spot or uses a greysheet. But for someone to say prices changes weekly and to pull out a 2012 reference is ridiculous. Now if he pulled out a 1960 reference that might be a bit better for the customer.
Oh I couldn't agree more. There's nothing better than buying a mint state Grant w/star gold commemorative for like ten bucks. I would be all over that!
Wonder if the dealer was just making sure it was not a rare or scarce date before pricing it as a common type coin. What was the coin and what was the price?
That reminds me, I was in my coin shop, and I saw the Botanic Coin&Currency commem set. for about $40!!! I knew it was a steal, an instant 100 dollar profit, but I got nervous and asked him to check the price, which I knew would be around 135 bucks. He couldn't find it in the greysheet, so he picked up the 2013 redbook and told me it was 160 or so, but he would sell it to me for 130 or so. :sniper:+ :angelic2:=:headbang:
I would say that this is because I have noticed that a portion of the coin collecting community, for whatever reason, are not always what we would call a "people person". Now this is obviously not true of everyone, or maybe even most people, but I have run into a few of these guys who couldn't work a sales or customer service job to save their life. Luckily for them they have a great passion and knowledge of coins and like you said, once they realize that you possess a certain level of knowledge regarding coins, they open up a little bit and give you the respect you will need in dealing with them. Until then they will assume you are a newb and treat you accordingly.
I don't think I would have laughed at him...but I would have asked him the same question. If he wants me as a customer (especially a long term repeat customer) he should have no problem explaining how he sets his coin prices to me.
He did what? Pull out a Red Book? You've been done a great service by this fellow showing you the exit. The poor fellow lacks a creative undertaking and a current Gray Sheet......
I made a dealer a little grumpy not long ago. I needed a slipcase for a dansco 1" album. He had every slipcase under the sun except for one for the 1" album. He tried to persuade me to buy a 7/8" one, but I didn't want it. He then tried to show me how a 7/8" slipcase would fit... ummm not so much. I told him that I wanted to keep looking. As I'm leaving he tried to convince me that they were one size fits all. Then I referred to the cross reference numbers that tell you which case fits which album. That's when he got grumpy. I didn't mean to hurt the mans pride.
