Really guy, come on. Stop ruining those coins like that. They deserve more respect because they are relics of the ancient world and often over 1000 years old. Much care should be taken to clean them the right way and give them the respect that is due.

Even though they are certainly not museum quality coins, it is your personal ancient gallery that you can have. I have my own little collection that I love even though they are low cost and low grade coins. I try my very best to take care of them and to preserve the patina as much as possible.

Not trying to put you down. Just start taking care of those coins the right way.

Now you know why most coin collectors say to never clean coins. This pic will haunt me for decades I think I might start telling everyone to never clean coins too.

Btw OP, no, the "gold" coin you are talking about is NOT gold. Might be a little brass which can look like gold. Gold does not tarnish, so ALWAYS looks like gold. Anyone bragging about how they found gold in uncleaned lots basically is a liar, (especially the sellers).

 

The only thing that I can say about this thread is that it makes me feel slightly better about my own attempt to clean ancients.

 

i understand, i just meant for this group, i do treat all of them with respect, i was a little imbarresd to post those coins as well. i have done extensive research, and im testing every option with this batch.

 

i am now testing one option on two coins called thermal shock. stick it in the frezzer an drop it in a pot of boling water.

 

I have read about that technique, and asked about it here on CT. The consensus at that time is that the thermal shock might crack the coin. After thinking about it, I have to agree. The idea is that the metal will contract and expand more than any crud coating it, and thus will crack the crud off. Metals will crystalize over a long period of time, and this would make them more prone to cracking. I don't think I would do it.
