I found this design to be rather attractive.

Type 1B and 2A. Only just found out about them so will be keeping an eye out in future for more. Telltale signs are.. 1B- i in ELIZABETH and 1 in 10 point at space in between the dots on the rim on both sides and only has four chest hairs on the lion. 2A has 5 chest hairs and the 1 and I point at the dots on both sides. These only occur on the 1992 date and only applies to the thick sides (not the tapered kind)
Apparently they are quite rare but don't get too hyped when you check one side if the other doesn't match you have a normal 1 of over 1 billion issues :)

Looks like it might be cleaned, as are about 90% of the Peruvian Sol coins from the 19th century.

I won this beauty on eBay today. The photos look bit "enhanced", if you will, to me. Hopefully it'll look great in person!

A great example of why coins without legends crammed all over them look vastly superior to US issues. Unfortunately, that could never happen here in the United States. Polish coins from the 1930s are another great example of minimalist legends producing some of the greatest coin designs of the 20th century.

I concur 100%. That is exactly why I love the Canadian 1967 coinage reverses. While there is the denomination and centennial statement in the legend, there are huge fields that show the cartwheel lustre wonderfully, with a simple design in the middle of the coin. For me, the bigger and cleaner the fields, the better...

While I love some wording, the majority, in my opinion, just takes away from the design. Although I love the wording on the back of the 2 1/2 Gulden from a few posts up, that's why I went for it instead of the Curaçao one (and the seahorse privy which I think is cute).

Maybe bilingual/multilingual countries or coin issuers are at an advantage here ... On Canadian coins you either use both English and French, or pick words that "work" in both languages. It is similar in Finland for example where inscriptions would have to be in Finnish and Swedish. So designers tend to avoid long bilingual blather. ;) Of course there is also the question of different tastes and what people are used to.
