This one arrived today. Now these really have some presence in hand. I know it is small compared to many other Ptolemaic bronzes but it is still large compared to almost every other coin in my collection. Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemy IV Philopator (221 - 204 B.C.) Bronze hemidrachm Obv:- Horned head of Zeus Ammon right, wearing taenia; Rev:- ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ, eagle standing left on thunderbolt, wings closed, filleted cornucopia left, ∆Ι between eagle's legs Minted in Alexandria References:- Svoronos 1127; SNG Cop 202; Noeske 145; BMC Ptolemies p. 57, 109 - 110; Weiser 50 (Ptolemy II, 253 - 249 B.C.) 33.40 g. 33.72 mm Martin
Martin awesome coin, these big coins with that much detail, Wow..:thumb:at our show this weekend they have a large bronze Ptolemy, its 41mm x 71g, i'm thinking of picking it up,but i have one 42mm x 70g..it doesn't have the detail this one has, but still nice..awesome coin..
My wife's got one of these and you could kill a small elephant if ya threw the coin and it landed just right. Nice addition!
I own a couple of 70+ grammers ... I love to hold them and show 'em off (they really are heavy in your hand ... cool feeling) ... => your coin has fantastic eye-appeal (super, warm colours and great contract between the toning and the higher, worn areas) ... full points!!
The wife's looks a little different from youse guys....... And the eagle looks like he's flippin' someone the bird.......
Curious => do you know if her coin is a Philopator? (I'm only asking, because perhaps different coin-denominations have the eagle doing different "tricks" ... head facing right, left, two eagles, etc, etc) Cheers
The dealer that she bought it from has it cataloged this way..... Ptolemaic Egypt, Ptolemy IV, 221-204 B.C.AE 40 (48.0 gms) BMC-6.66,37. Head of Zeus right/Eagle on thunderbolt
Green, awesome coin, we need weights and measures..how big is that coin, its like how big is that Salmon..
Rangers or Islanders fan? ... ummm, hopefully you'll know that I'm talking about your state's two hockey teams!!?
Neither. Yankees/Knicks fan. I understand that this can be a trifle disconcerting to a Canadian.........
