I do not know the precise plant used on the coin. Krause describes it as a vanilla plant. I just read this interesting Wikipedia description of the vanilla plant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanilla Apparently, it was not possible to grow the Mexican flat-leaved variety of vanilla in Madagascar until some fellow discovered that it could be hand-pollinated (because it normally takes some special symbiotic insect to perform the pollination). Due to hand pollination, it thrived in places like Madagascar. I learn something every day at CT.
The Schön says it is "Gewürzvanille (Vanilla planifolia - Orchidaceae)". That would be this one then. Christian

Here are a few pictures of left over change from Aruba after having a few beers at a sidewalk cafe...Now Aruba is no longer under the Dutch Rule and has its independence. I wonder if their coinage has changed it's been a few year since my last land fall there.

thanks for posting these coins. I have 2 Netherlands 5 cent coins. I did not know about the 10 and 25 cent coins. it would be a nice little set to make. is there a 1 cent coin with the same obverse design ? thanks in advance.
