I had decided to stop getting distracted by LRB and to save up for a big Greek silver coin. I have failed miserably. I saw this coin and bought it along with another couple of Lugdunum coins. Ho Hum. Another hole in my budget. Constantinian Period City Commemorative Obv:-- CONSTANTINOPOLIS, Helmeted and laureate Constantinopolis bust left Rev:-- --, Victory standing left on prow of a galley, holding transverse spear across her body and shield Minted in Lugdunum. dot in Crescent PLG in exe. A.D. 330 - 333 Reference:-- RIC Lugdunum 256 (R1). Bastien Vol. XIII 222. I thought the bust to be most striking, being somehow enhanced by the flowlines radiating outwards. The reverse is also well executed. The whole coin benefiting from a decent strike and little wear. Martin
Well, I've gotta say it's one of the finest examples of the type I've seen, particularly because of the flow lines. If it's a miserable failure, it's a spectacular one at that.
Before I completely read your post, I looked at the enlarged image of the coin. I thought, that is a fine bust on this coin. Of course, then I read the rest of your post and find that is what drew you to the coin. Like JA, it's a very nice failure.
Super coin ... => yah, usually I post my version whenever I get a chance, but this time I don't want to pose-down beside your winner!!
Martin, i hear you man. I don't collect romans yet they end up in my boxes. You are a collector, you buy beautiful coins when you can. I am lucky if i can reign in my purchases to only ancients,
Thanks for all the replies. I just thought I would complete the thread by showing the other two LRB I bought at the same time. Having chosen the CONSTANTINOPOLIS I simply couldn't leave it alone at just one coin and so bought two more coins from Lugdunum to accompany it. Commemorative AE3 Obv:– VRBS ROMA, Helmeted bust of Roma left Rev:– –, She wolf feeding Romulus and Remus, two stars above Minted in Lugdunum (•SLG). A.D. 332 Reference(s) – Bastien XIII 237 (23). RIC VII Lyons 247 (R3). Constantine II Ae3 Obv:– FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C, Laureate, cuirassed bust right Rev:– GLORIA EXERCITVS, Two soldiers standing either side of two standards Minted in Lugdunum (dot in Crescent PLG). A.D. 332 Reference:– Bastien XIII 225 (5 examples cited). RIC 255 (R2)
Definitely excellent coins. Seems like Lugdunum is your favorite mint city. I've seen a lot of your coins by now.
Spectacular coins! I like all three of them. But the helmeted portrait of Constantine on the first coin is really something special. That kind of artistic detail is just beautiful. Those are the kind of LRBs you can keep making exceptions for.
That bust is actually a personification of Roma. I've got a nice chocolatey one, looks good enough to eat...
My understanding is that on the CONSTANTINOPOLIS coin it is considered to be a representation of the city of Constantinopolis and not Roma, celebrating the founding of the new city as the replacement for Rome. on the VRBS ROMA it is considered to be Roma. I think it somehwat academic as they both have the same attributes and could not be differentiated without the legends. Regards, Martin
Either way I'm learning. And I appreciate the comments/additions/corrections. Really that's one of the best features of a forum like this. You keep learning from those collectors who are more experienced. Thanks all.
If we must pick a mint, Lugdunum is a good choice. Most collectors value (and pay extra for) high grade coins but not as many appreciate the additional value of coins in fine style. Here we have seen both together. If a coin's only fault is that it is not Greek silver, that doesn't seem so bad.
I used to collect city commemoratives very extensively, had tons of them. Now I just have one VRBS and one Constantinoplis. I kept my best VRBS ROMA. It is still the nicest I have ever seen anywhere!
